Certain brands of "canned" dog and cat food is being recalled in the US and I think here too . Iams ,compliments and many other brands are effected .The company responsible packages 60% of the dog food sold in cans.

Pet-food supplier recalls some cat and dog food
Friday, March 16, 2007 - 06:32 PM
By: 680News staff

Toronto - One of North America's largest pet-food suppliers is recalling some canned and foil pouch dog and cat food after the deaths of one dog and several cats in the United States.

The cuts and gravy style products made by Menu Foods are sold under 17 different store and national brands between Dec. 3rd and March 6th.

The complete list will be posted at www.menufoods.com/recall tomorrow morning at 6 a.m., however some details have been released.

Iams is recalling 3-oz, 5.5-oz, 6-oz and 13.2-oz canned and 3-oz and 5.3-oz foil pouches made by Menu Foods.

The codes are 6339 through to 7073 followed by the plant code 4197.

No Kibble products of any brand are affected.

More information is available at iams.com and eukanuba.com

There were complaints of animals vomiting, loosing their appetite and suffering kidney failure. If this happens to your pet, take it to the vet immediately.

Menu Foods also sells under the names Master Choice, Compliments and Select but has not said which specific products are affected.

No deaths have been reported in Canada.

Thanks for posting about the Iams recall. The other long list of brand names for some reason didn't include Iams.

Last week Sat I had to put down my Petunia (cat) for kidney failure. I still had some of his food left and checked the date code..........yes, they matched.

I have 3 other cats that did not get this food because I was tring to put some extra weight on Petunia.

I'm so sad, can't stop crying and in shock. I already called my vet and Iams. Iams did confirm that they used that plant for their wet pouched food..

Why didn't they include Iams on that list? I only found out about Iams from the post above.

That's the information they now have listed on their website:

http://www.menufoods.com/recall/

I know they state that none of the dog/cat food sold in Canada is affected but I still wouldn't take any chances if I fed any of those brands.

mummummum March 17th, 2007 12:56 PM

:sorry: I realize this is probably inappropriate thing to say here ~ but, why do our animals have to die? Isn't this something they should have known about before they manufactured and distributed all of this food ?:sorry:

rainbow March 17th, 2007 01:11 PM

There has been lots of recalls in the past for lots of different pet foods and I'm sure there will be more in the future  because it is human error that has caused them all.

This is so tragic .
But once you can deal with this You might want to find out when they knew because a story I read on CBC said they have already changed an ingredient that they had been using . http://www.cbc.ca/canada/story/2007/03/16/petfoodbad.html?ref=rss

I would not count on that though, since the plant that was producing the food is located in Ontario.

It's only the cans or pouches of wet (canned) food that are affected. If you go to their website ( www.menufoods.com/recall/ ) and click on the product name it will give you the dates and code numbers to look for.

Prin March 18th, 2007 01:43 AM

Yeah, but if you saw your brand on that list... :o

rainbow March 18th, 2007 01:57 AM

Well, they do have their phone number in large print at the top of the page for further information:
Recall Information 1-866-895-2708
And, I think it's pretty easy to figure out to click on the brand name if you're using it. :o

Yeah, but I mean, if your brand was there... I mean,

You know?

I'm glad TO wasn't on that list.;)

Thanks Rainbow, I did manage to make contact with Iams, they took down my info and said they would get back to me. I could not get thru to Menu Foods, the mfg, the lines were busy, I tried all afternoon.

At least I know why my cat had kidney failure. All I was trying to do was get some extra weight on him. So I went out and bought the Iams pouches and tiny round cans (both in the recall). My other cats are just a bit over weight, so I'd take him to another room, door closed and gave him an extra 2 feeding of the Iams. I did notice that each day he was eating a bit less, but didn't think it was a big deal cuz he was still eating the dry food that my other cats eat(Natural Balance) .

I told hubby that it looks like he losing weight, this doesn't make sense. So about 5 days after I started feeding him Iams, I found him hiding in the closet. I noticed saliva dripping from his mouth. I was at the vet within the hour. Vet took blood sample, told me he lost 3 lbs, and would call me in the morning. That night Petunia urinated on my dog's bed., hide in the closet again.

Vet called in the AM (last Sat), blood test results > "kidney failure". I wrapped him in a towel, held him on my lap on the way back to the vet to put him down, I noticed that he urinated again. Vet told me that I did the right thing to put him down asap, he probably wouldn't have lasted another night.

First thing this AM I saw the listing of brand names, but no mention of Iams, until I found my here. I went right to the Iams web site which confirmed kidney failure, date codes, etc. Thank goodness I still had some pouches left. I was shocked to see that I had the exact matching numbers. So now it all makes sense.

Sorry for the long post. I wanted to share in hopes of helping out others who might be going through the same thing I did.

Prin March 18th, 2007 02:10 AM

Oh, that is the most horrible thing any pet owner must ever go through. That's just terrible! My heart totally goes out to you. :grouphug: :grouphug:

rainbow March 18th, 2007 02:19 AM

Icy, I have tears in my eyes reading your post. It is just so sad that you lost your cat because of that. I feel so, so sorry for you and my deepest condolences go out to you and your hubby. :grouphug: :candle:

OntarioGreys March 18th, 2007 02:44 AM

I am very sorry Icy for your loss.

I looked at menu food recalls notice a couple of the pet food manufacturers explained what ingredient was the problem, but from another site, someone had found out it was a wheat that was used,
I had predicted it would be some form of grain, so more likely a fungus that was in the wheat (a mycotoxin)

And because of the huge problems with mycotoxins it was one if the reasons I decided to have all my dogs on grain free diets, this here recall is devastating due to the sheer number of brands that is involved, I used to add in canned food before switching to EVO, never realizing how many companies contract out the production of their foods to other companies, and it seems many of the kibbles today companies are contracting out as well.

For anyone that has feed foods from one of these companies even if your pet does not seem ill, I would highly recommend getting a blood test done now, so as the check in any kidney damage has occured, if any problems with blood values submit a claim, if you wait and problems show up a few months later, it would be impossible to prove it was related to the food.

mafiaprincess March 18th, 2007 12:06 PM

Hey Prin.. A year ago I was using cans of Nutro high energy to put weight back on Cider, she was looking weirdly thin. Just knowing I used it at one point makes you go ugh... Seeing a brand you have used in wet.

rainbow March 18th, 2007 12:37 PM

I only use wet cat food as a supplement but I've decided to stop using all canned food until this recall is finally figured out. They keep adding new brands to their list or companies are "voluntarily" recalling their products as a precaution. :frustrated:

rainbow March 18th, 2007 12:41 PM

Hill's Science Diet has voluntarily recalled some of their cat foods:
