Greetings All & Warning to Travellers to Ontario
Hello, :)
I was doing a search to find out if I should feed two baby racoons who tried to come in through the window. They looked absolutely 'anorexic' for lack of a better word. Still haven't decided what to do if I see them again. Anyway, I decided to name them - Derek and Jeter and then choose that as my username - even though I'm a devoted Blue Jay fan. During my search I happened on this site and learned about Puppy Mills and that City pounds in various areas give or sell foundlings to research companies. I'm not as well informed as I thought I was. I went to www.biteback.com or .us after reading blueyedviolet's thread, but I guess she's not coming back. Hope she takes legal action and wish her success if she does. I thought the post below from www.animalliberationfront.com could save a visitor to Ontario a lot of grief, but didn't know where to post it so here it is: PROVINCE OF ONTARIO, CANADA - TOURISM ALERT The province of Ontario, Canada is in the final stage of implementing breed specific legislation. This coming law is deliberately vague, and will "ban" pit bull terriers, Staffordshire Bull Terriers, American Staffordshire Terriers, American Pit Bull Terriers and any dog resembling those breeds - which could include Labrador retrievers, Great Danes, Boxers, Rottweilers, Boston Terriers, and any other dog with short hair and a large head. To avoid the possibility of a tourist's dog being seized and either euthanized or sent to a research laboratory, the Dog Legislation Council of Canada strongly recommends that all tourists travelling with dogs? NOT visit Ontario. When this law is enacted, tourists will not be advised of this "ban" and? its requirements. Further, a municipality may pass by-laws no less onerous than this coming law, which means that travelling through Ontario will require a tourist to research the by-laws in every municipality on the route. Seizure of a tourist's dog is probable, not just possible. Please warn your viewers that for the safety of their dogs - Do NOT travel in Ontario. Really it's not that funny......imagine if you can a tourist heading home running into "Chuck" the employee of an outsourced company hired by some small municipality to enforce the DOLA - Chuck makes nine dollars an hour and has a book called "Simon & Schuster's guide to dogs" as his main reference, he received no additional training and is also responsible for enforcing a host of other bylaws such as parking. Chuck's 'partner' is a college student working a summer job. Joe doesn't like any dogs. It is possible that a dog could be so ridiculously misidentified that it is seized. Now make it worse.........the tourist is from North Carolina and can not afford to take more time off of work to fight this thing in Ontario. Let's see what happens and just how funny it really is. Remember in the UK the case that really showed how ridiculous BSL was involved a 'Great Dane' identified as a pit bull. |
Boston terriers are so tiny in comaprison to pit bulls. Would they think the boston is a pit bull puppy or something, cuz i just dont see how one can mistake a boston for a pit bull.
|
not all bostons are small ... there seems to be lines out there ... a larger boston, which stands about 20' and then the smaller bostons, about 14-15 inches at most.
there are some boston/pittie crosses on petfinder .. so you never know what is possible |
The entire legislation is funny to me but that post was hillarious.
|
I still think that poodles should be banned. One darn near took my finger off last week. Hmmm....oh, yeah, and chihuahuas, one of those snarled at my dogs the other day....oh, yeah, and corgis, one of those snapped at my son last month.
This is so ridiculous....especially to read that my lab/mastiff/rotti mix and my mastiff/rotti mix puppy are considered "dangerous". What a hoot. |

Poodles what about JRT's LMAO
I think I've been bitten 3x or more by one of those and my dogs been attacked by JRT's corgi and a chi LMHO |
My neighbours Maltese regularly attacks my Akita and Lab. Goes at them at the gate that divides the two properties and eggs them on. Sometimes they ignore him, but sometimes they have a good snarly fit back at him, but he's soooo much the instigator - all teeth that dumb dog! His owner keeps threatening to give him to my girls for dinner, but I say no because they could choke on a bone... :p

I always said that if our late maltese x had the size for her attitude, we would be in real big trouble! The same about our late pom! They were not just bark, they meant business and for some reason thought that they had to be boss and could take on any dog, even if they were 100x their size! Don't get me wrong, they were normally very sweet on their walks, they just protected their property.

It really isn't that far fetched. Most people have no idea what a pit bull is - including the people that passed this law. How many times did we hear Mr. Bryant rant about the 150 pit bull that jumped the fence and attacked someone? |
You are right, some people are 'silly' enough to confuse the two. I always loved Bostons and i tried to capture a lost pit bull (it had it's tags on). I felt so terrible that he ran away from me and that i could not help him.
|
I think someone posted that before (the OP's post). I've seen it a few times.
I don't think confusing bostons for pits is too hard. Some staffy's are very small and similar shaped. Our Odin is friends with a couple of bostons. Our english bulldog CONSTANTLY gets called a pit bull...don't know why. Just today a group of kids were walking across a parking lot (getting in all the cars ways because they were walking all side by side...about 6 of them) started screaming and freaking out when they saw my dog, who was in the car with a seat belt on. They kept saying "look at that vicious dog, he's a pit bull, he is going to kill something". I was SOOOO pissed, as was BF who was out returning a movie we rented. I am really getting sick of it. It's happening almost daily lately, with more people outside in the nice weather. I just wish people would educate themselves. |
