Brick had an operation today
 My poor boy was at the vet all day today getting a lump removed from his back haunch. It looked like a mole and the vet was concerned about it because of its colour and it had hair growing out of it. So Tim dropped him off this morning and I picked him up about 2:00. He is very groggy and wobbly, but he is ok! We should find out the results of the lump on Tues or Wed. I'm soooo scared!!! Please keep your paws and fingers crossed for my baby! I'll keep ya'll posted!!! :fingerscr

Just heard from the vet - I guess it's good news but a bit scary nonetheless. His lump was cancerous, but it was benign (which I guess means it isn't spreadable - I didn't know that). They called it a collagenous hamartoma, which after doing some research, tells me this: "nodular poorly circumscribed focus of redundant collagen in the superficial dermis"....would love to know that in layman's terms. I know what collagen is and I know what the superficial dermis is, but  The vet claims he got it all out, so I hope to God he is right!!
HAMARTOMAS : This refers to a mass of disorganised but mature tissue indigenous to the particular site. Hamartomas are regarded as congenital but many are clinically inapparent and recognized only later in life. |
How you doing Catt are you okay?
This is scary no doubt ofcourse it is! :grouphug: to you and Brick!! What is the vets recommendation if any at this point now? When you have some time browse through this site it has lots of great information on it.... http://www.caninecaregroup.net/dhealthissues.htm#DANGER%20OF%20VACCINATIONS I'd consider taking him to a holistic vet in time to get some advise on how to boost his immune system and stem off any other sites that may appear. I am giving you the HUGEST hug ever!!! Sadie gives Brick kisses and you too! |
Thanks Luba!! You're the greatest!! After I had my little cry and snuggle with my boy, I think I'm ok! The vet didn't say anything to us about what to do, basically it was "this is what it is, here's your insurance papers, see ya!" I wasn't too impressed so I will be calling back once I've calmed down! I will definately look into holistic vets, that site opened my eyes (but scared me at the same time....know what I mean??) :grouphug: Thanks friend!!! Brick says thanks too...with a big slurp along with it!!!

I know it is scary stuff but educating outselves is really what we need to do.
Sounds like your vet was rather standoff'ish! I'd get a copy of the lab report from your vet (results of the biopsy) and the surgical reports and take them with you to a holistic vet for sure. BIG BIG HUGS!! Sadie wants to give you kisses really badly and to Brick too....so here goes! WTG with getting through this ...you'll be just fine (both of you) |
hamartomas are usually harmless and the vet is wrong in a way - there are so many reasons people or animals can have them. Heredity, trauma, skin lesions. They are basically just leftover skin (aka lumps but you already know THAT) that can be cancerous but are more often benign depending on where you find them. They can be in many parts of the body.
I was reading an oncology journal last week (a study on breast cancer) and it included this: "The term hamartoma was first coined by Arrigoni et al in 1971,1 as a well circumscribed breast lesion with varying amounts of benign epithelial elements, fibrous tissue, and fat. Many authors consider this entity to be underdiagnosed.2–4 Pathologically, a distinctive appearance is lacking." In layperson's terms, it just means the skin cells are overgrown in whatever area it was found in - can be the lung, breast, heart, anywhere really. I am just happy to hear your furry one is OK!! I am sending good vibes your way! :grouphug: |
