I heard on CBC radio this morning that Menu Foods is denying responsibility. They say that these pets that died must have eaten something outdoors. I went to their website and it said nothing like that. There was no mention of the denial. So I watched the news again and sure enough they repeated the same denial of responsibility.

Very frustrating when the media is reporting conflicting stories between their televised reports and their web content. And why is it that CBC keeps trying to tie the Royal Canin class action suit to this one. That recall has nothing to do with this one. It was an error in the amount of vitamin D3 that was put in only a few of their products that were not even available over the counter. Not to justify that recall, but what's the connection?
I think there are lots "asking" but there is no one "answering". :yell: :yell:
Is there? I've heard a lot of "Why", "What caused the recall" but when the answer heard is "Wheat Glutten", there's a lot of assumption. Bad batch, is usually what I've heard, but when we hear "quantities too high", I've not heard one person ask "How is that possible, and who could be responsible". Oh well if it's a computer error... :frustrated:

Prin March 22nd, 2007 02:29 PM

We all just assume they didn't inspect a batch to save a few bucks. We just kinda know how this could happen.

ummm, yeah. suddenly hundreds of cats and dogs are dying because they are licking dirty sidewalks. suuuuure.... :frustrated:

It just makes it all scarier so we tune in more. Everybody is trying to gain or save throughout this and most of their "facts" are wrong. The newspaper yesterday said "Naturo" was one of the foods recalled. How pathetic is that? And it's an article from the Associated Press, so who knows how many newspapers ran it.

Come on, journalists, get on the ball! :yell:

rainbow March 22nd, 2007 02:55 PM

The media is the absolute worst. :yell:   That's why I like www.petconnection.com :thumbs up

rainbow March 22nd, 2007 02:58 PM

Oh, BTW, I realize they are syndicated by "UniversalPress" but the contributors seem to get their facts straight before posting. :)

AirIntake March 22nd, 2007 03:32 PM

I'm wondering, is there anything that people that weren't affected can do to help? My cats were very lucky and weren't eating contaminated food, but I'd very much like to help make sure Menu Foods and the other companies get sued out of existence.
but I'd very much like to help make sure Menu Foods and the other companies get sued out of existence.
My thoughs exactly .
I did hear of 2 class action lawsuits being launched today from Toronto and another in Chicago.

Does anyone know of any dogs or cats that are responding to treatment ?

TeriM March 22nd, 2007 09:29 PM

OMG, pet connection has numbers of 1715 sick or dead pets and also 845 (500 cats + 345 dogs) deceased pets   .

Prin March 22nd, 2007 09:42 PM

That's just so sad.

antifreeze????

This was just sent to me and cross posted on another board....this is beyond horrible...

Subject: treatment of pet food contamination

Hey guys.
my friend the 4th year vet student whose cat nearly died from the affected pet food is doing great!!! His kidney values are normal as of yesterday. She is the one who tested the food she had been feeding him and found the traces of antifreeze. D***l was treated for antifreeze toxicity very aggressively and he is alive and normal now. When Mxxxxy called the california natural people they said that the foods she had bought were not affected because they came from the Kansas plant for Menu foods and not the NJ plant and that they don't have the wheat gluten in them. When she asked what they were talking about the woman she was on the phone with shut up very quickly and got off the phone just as fast. Msxxxxy will be calling the FDA tomorrow and the AVMA and report this to them. Ms***y also stated to me this evening that the other cases she knows of that are alive are the ones that have been treated for antifreeze toxicity. Please do crosspost. The FDA and AVMA are needing multiple different labs testing the foods and getting the same results prior to reporting anything and I feel that
we need to get the info out there even in this preliminary stage. So
please
let others know about this, I truely think it could save more lives and given that there are now reports in the thousands on the news tonight. I will rely further updates as I know them. Doc S

Scary!

rainbow March 22nd, 2007 10:39 PM

This gets worse all the time. So, is she saying that someone deliberately tainted the wheat gluten with antifreeze or California Natural food?

Sweetgrass March 22nd, 2007 10:41 PM

That does seem to be where her thinking is going...she is trying to cautious but still get the word out...it is too hard to even imagine, but if one animal could be helped by this info...getting the word out is worth it.

rainbow March 22nd, 2007 11:19 PM

I'm still confused. California Natural doesn't use wheat gluten in their canned foods. The wheat gluten is only in the recalled canned foods. What food was your friend feeding that was contaminated with antifreeze?

Sweetgrass March 22nd, 2007 11:33 PM

I don't know..this was the info I received, when I hear back I'll ask....

I agree.. it is worth having some scepticism about...i was left with a " but what if it could be this though, and I didn't post?" kind of reaction.
When I know some more, i'll bring it here too...

Kimmee

Thanks, because I don't want to pass on information until I know myself. Hope you hear from her soon and looking forward to your update. :)

Also, you should tell her to forward the information to: www.petconnection.com and the FDA.

rainbow March 22nd, 2007 11:55 PM

Here's the website to contact the FDA: http://www.fda.gov/opacom/backgrounders/problem.html

Here's the latest from www.petconnection.com:
Pet-food recall: More numbers … and some help
I’m sad to say we’ve passed a milestone. We now have more than 1,000 pets reported as deceased into our PetConnection.com database.

Again, we must put things in perspective. These are self-reported numbers. We have asked everyone if they checked the brand against the recall list, and have also asked them to provide a veterinary reference. We felt that this would give us a better chance of having numbers that reflect reality. Most people both named their veterinarian and named the brand.

We have said from the first that we put the database up because we believed based on all the anecdotal evidence we were seeing — in our e-mail boxes, and on forums and blogs — that the number of dead pets was far greater than what the government was, and is, reporting.

We still believe that to be the case, and today we finally started to see other experts agree with us, such as here and here. We believe there will be more news on this front, and that the “official” count will grow as well.

We also have from the first encouraged people to report their information to the FDA and to the companies and the manufacturer. You can find all those links here. In the meantime, we continue to keep our database open for entries.

Tomorrow, we’re going to try to get some perspective on all this. Where do we go from here?

In the meantime, if you haven’t checked your pet’s food — “wet” food only is listed — against the recall list, you must do so. If you even suspect your pet has eaten any of the recalled product — even if the animal seems fine — call your veterinarian about a diagnostic test of kidney function. It’s an investment in your peace of mind that may save your pet’s life. (Read our piece on kidney disease for more information.)

More than 1,000 pets reported to them now.   I wonder when the FDA numbers are going to start catching up?

rainbow March 23rd, 2007 12:08 AM

I just found this from their website as well:
We have heard there may be some news on the “what caused this?” front coming soon, maybe even tomorrow, and also that the FDA is working to make reporting easier. More on these angles when we know more.

In parting, we want to share one criticism we received, telling us we should report only information released from the government or trade associations.

I guess it comes down to whether you want the media to be lap dogs or watch dogs. Us? We’re going to keep barking, like watch dogs.

Sweetgrass March 23rd, 2007 12:32 AM

I have sent that link along and will let you know when I hear back......

thanks, Kimmee

rainbow March 23rd, 2007 12:45 AM

Thanks. It's always hard to pass on second hand information. Maybe your friend would like to join pets.ca and post herself? :)

Quins-mum March 23rd, 2007 05:35 AM

i would just like everyone to take a moment (not that you havent already done so) and think about the thousand pets that have passed away because of this, and thank our lucky stars that we havent (hopefully) been affected by it.

:grouphug:

Lets hope that no more furries have to die because of this human ****-up

chico2 March 23rd, 2007 06:47 AM

The media,in my case the Toronto Star,is still reporting only 14 animals have died as a result of contaminated foods, what's up with this:frustrated:
Even "only"14 animals is a tragedy, but why is the media not honest:frustrated:

mummummum March 23rd, 2007 06:59 AM

Chico, I think somewhere on here it notes that the numbers of deaths and illness as a result of the tainted foods are self-reporting which may mean they may not be accurate.

Rat poisoning!

I'm not sure if anyone else has posted this or if it should be in another thread, but here's the article from ABC with the release from the FDA which states that they found a type of rat poison in the recalled foods from a contaminated shipment from China. They're not sure if it's the only cause of the kidney issues, but at least it's a start!

Prin March 23rd, 2007 11:01 AM

Yeah, it's been posted in a new thread here: http://www.pets.ca/forum/showthread.php?t=38148

(but I think it needs as much exposure as possible at this point  )

kathryn March 23rd, 2007 11:06 AM

I don't know if it has already been said but a pesticide called umm anoptrim or something was found to be on the wheat imported from china.. it's illegal in the us and highly dangerous.. I'll find a link to the story in a minute!

http://abclocal.go.com/wpvi/story?section=animals_oddities&id=5143788
