Thanks so much for that info...
No, it's not the ingredient that is involved in the recall. I would try to avoid it in the future. It's not a very healthy ingredient. There are alot of new foods coming out that don't have corn wheat or any kind of gluten. They are just fillers that they use in place of meat. They don't have much protein value and can go toxic easily.
I really appreciate it.

Does anyone know what brands of dog biscuits are made by Sunshine Mills? I heard they got recalled because of the wheat-gluten but they haven't annouced the brands yet.

Mypetsrmykids April 5th, 2007 05:12 PM

I just discovered that Sunshine Mills makes PupCorn, which is another item I have given to my dogs. I'm not sure if these will be among those items in the recall, looking at the ingredients; they contain wheat flour. I don't see any wheat-gluten.

SableCollie April 5th, 2007 05:41 PM

Sunshine makes these products:
PupCorn
Dr. Dental Chews
Meaty Treats Jerky
Crunchin' Bones
Gymbone
Puffs N' Purrs
Field Trial/Field Trail Select
Cat Cafe/Cat cafe Select
Canine Principle
Feline Principle
Gourmet Gravy
Deli Chunks
George Jones Country Gold
Nurture
Chatham
Nourish
Champ
Thrifty
Hunter's Special
Sportsman's Pride
Jerky Dog Snacks

I got these off sunshine's website. I am not sure if all of them are involved in the recall, or only some, but better safe than sorry.

Mypetsrmykids April 5th, 2007 05:52 PM

That's great! Thanks Sable....I don't know why but I couldn't get into their actual web-site. I don't understand what is taking them so long to identify which ones to recall but I wish they would hurry up and announce it. In my opinion, these companies that just recalled food recently are probably even more deceitful. Their people must've known about this wheat-gluten they bought but tried to keep it from us.

SableCollie April 5th, 2007 06:28 PM

Yeah, I think their site may be down, I had to view a cached version. Funny how company's websites magically disappear when bad things happen.

Mypetsrmykids April 5th, 2007 06:30 PM

Ok, there is a list...looks like they are all biscuits. Go to this site for the list http://www.avma.org/aa/menufoodsrecall/sunshine_mills_070405.pdf

Holistic foods have been around for a while now and just get better and better, IMO.

Mypetsrmykids April 5th, 2007 06:43 PM

Oh, I totally agree! My point was just that people don't have to settle for foods that have these bad ingredients. There are alot of healthy foods out there for our pets and holistic foods are a great way to go!

SableCollie April 5th, 2007 07:05 PM

Looks like they do some contracting for private store brands there too. I would wonder why some of their products are affected and not others? Unless the other ones don't contain wheat...
We used to get tons of the Sportsman's Pride, Hunter's Special, Field Trial food donated, and it was the most godawful crap imaginable.

Foods NOT on recall

Here is a link to another site containing a list of foods not on the recall. It looks like it is semi-current and you still have to be careful and informed, but it's a start....

http://www.thepetfoodlist.com/

With the ever-growing list of recalled foods and treats I think someone has to start compiling (and maintaining) a list of foods that are still safe. A hugh undertaking considering how fast the situation is changing, but I for one want to know what I can purchase that is still safe.

This recall has major news coverage now, but no one is providing safe alternatives for those of us that don't have time to cook for our pets. I know it's a crap shoot trying to stay current, but maybe this site could blaze the trail. With as many folks that logon to this site internationally, maybe we have one or more moderators (several of who seem to be experts in the field)that could take our inputs and compile a comprehensive list of what is not on the recall list.

Just my thoughts, but I sure would appreciate it - it would provide a little sunshine of hope in all this bleak darkness.

Edgewaters April 7th, 2007 02:18 PM

Maybe it would be easier just to compile a list of a few foods that are deemed "healthy alternatives" rather than a huge list of all the foods that haven't been recalled (and there's no guarantee that some of them won't be recalled in the future, or that non-recalled foods are even necessarily safe).

Could also include a few recommendations, like some that are less pricey than others, some that are more appealing than others etc to address common questions like how much does it cost and will my pet like it.

dtbmnec April 9th, 2007 05:04 PM

I just hope Friskies isn't next!

I know I should be feeding better food but we're doing the best we can with the money (or lack thereof) we have.

With the expansions to the list and the fact that my boys are allergic to beef and chicken this is really starting to worry me. :frustrated:

Megan

rainbow April 9th, 2007 06:27 PM

Megan, just don't feed any of the "cuts and gravy" style ones.

Prin April 10th, 2007 12:42 AM

And stay away from wheat too, to be safer.

kahula April 10th, 2007 08:36 PM

The frustration...

So now Medi-Cal Feline is on the list, just saw it on the news. This is just way beyond devastating. Took the cats off all Iams/Eukanuba started to move them to Royal Canin Dry and Techni-cal wet, so are these going to be next(personally not convinced that other items other than wheat gluten wont surface). Just another lesson learned to listen to your gut, I emailed Royal Canin 2 times before making the switch asking if they used Menu Foods at all for anything, never got a response, stupid me assumed that with all the chaos they were just probably too back logged to email back, was desperate and made the switch, even though my gut told me to stay away from any of the major players. KICKING MYSELF!!!!

On that note, has anyone tried the Origen brand for cats?

Jovin April 10th, 2007 08:45 PM

Darn!

No, I haven't tried the origen brand, but my neighbour has been feeding her two Burmese cats that medical feline for years! One is very ill right now and I was wondering about the darned food....NOW WE HAVE THIS! Where is this going to end?

clm April 10th, 2007 08:54 PM

Orijen is a great grain free food, switched my 4 cats over to it and they love it.

Cindy

kahula April 10th, 2007 09:01 PM

Thank You!

Thanks Jovin and Cindy for such quick responses, I have just barely started to make the switch to Royal Canin so I am going to stop now and go to Origen. What these poor things have to go through.

Has anyone seen this, I am signing the petition....

"NDP MP Olivia Chow launched a minute-long amateur video Friday on the popular website aimed at getting the message out that Canada needs to start regulating the pet food industry."

Man am I ticked now and scared.

I just got home from a six hour drive and was dozing on the couch and man did I sit up quick and run for the puter when I heard a med-cal product was on the list now. I feed my one cat med-cal preventive and my male the royal canin urinary so food. Those two are suppose to be fine but I am not conviced they won't be now. I am leaving in a few weeks to go up to lake of the woods for work and we do our shopping in Kenora and the food selection there is limited. My male has had crystals in the past so I am afraid to try anything else. It is an hour boat ride from work(and where we live) and then a 20min car ride to the vets. If the weather is bad we can't leave the island, so to be "safe" I put him on the royal canin urinary so food and my female on the medi-cal preventive(just in case and he sometimes does steal her food). Now I don't know what the H**l to do.

Back when this all first started I checked to make sure non of their foods were made by menu and from what I found non were...well guess what. I also checked and there is no wheat in the two foods I feed but I am still scared. I checked will the vets at my clinic as well as the staff and they all agreed becasue of my situation to stay with the urinary so. If I wasn't so isolated searching for something esle to feed wouldn't be so bad since the vet is around the corner but that's not the case.....

I am also ticked as I joined their royal canin pets first email alert, which they email you news about different things etc... and I did not recieve an email alert regarding the recall. I thought I would get one....I thought because I joined that if something happed I would hear about it right away, maybe not sooner than everyone else but if I happen to not watch the news one day that I would still hear about it.

I just really don't know what to do now....like soo many others I am sure.

Jovin April 10th, 2007 11:10 PM

I'm with you, Dustybird....

I'm fed up, and scared skinny! I'm sick of worrying about what the heck to buy for cat food....what's safe today and maybe NOT safe tomorrow!

I'm going to sign whatever petition I find, to see if something can be done about this.

Colubridz April 10th, 2007 11:17 PM

Oh man I just heard about this tonight. After spending close to 2 grand in the last 3 weeks after max started peeing blood and mitten began vomiting after the last food they were on was recalled ( the hills weight control) they were both doing better on there meds and max was put on the medi-cal crystal dry and wet and mitten on medi cal hypo allergenic, both now are recalled.

I want to switch them onto raw however with max's crystals and mittens hypoallergenic/irritable bowel syndrom is there anyway I can make it that will still address these conditions?

Kayla

Jovin April 10th, 2007 11:30 PM

Omg!

Could this get any worse? I have the same problem, Kayla. I don't have a cat of my own right now, but take care of my daughter's and kind of share custody....I buy all the food practically, and this cat has a history of crystals too.

Neither my daughter Nor I can afford all the expensive foods that you're supposed to buy for this problem, but we try to make sure that we do give him the best possible choice that we can. I'm so worried about this now. THERE'S NOTHING SAFE ANYMORE!

dustybird April 11th, 2007 12:40 AM

If I didn't have a male cat I wouldn't be soo ticked right now. But becasue of the flutd problem I am limited in my choices. I would love to feed the cats something else but.... I checked the two pet food stores in Kenora and the one sells all the food on the recall except for wellness and fromm both of which seem to encourage crystals, so that's out and the other sells brands I have never heard of. One is made by orijen but has fish oil in it and from what I have been told fish and crystals are somehow linked.

If isolation wasn't a factor I would risk trying different foods since the vet is around the corner but from may to the end of oct it is very risky to try switching foods. I know I made the choice to work where I do but geez, I shouldn't have to worry about my pets food being contaminated(at least not how bad it has become). I love both my cat's very much but, and I know this sounds bad will never have a male cat again(of course I say that but then again if one came into my life that needed a home I wouldn't say no)...it's too stressful always worrying about crystals and blockages, I know it can happen in females but it is really rare for them to become blocked since their urethra is wider. I worry all the time anyway but crystals and blockages are so common place now(and seem to be affected by food where as other things can arrise for many different reasons) and if you don't catch it in time well...not good.

I assume the medical dissolution canned was made in a different plant than their other food as it is the only food they make that is chunks in gravy. Doesn't make me feel any better though. The food I am feeding doesn't have any wheat in it but I still worry.

Ohh the madness of it all....I am at the point now if they happen to sneez or sleep somewhere different I want to know why.

Prin April 11th, 2007 12:44 AM

If anybody has specific diet questions, I think you should post them in new threads, either in the dog and cat food forum or in the raw forum. Not enough people come in here to address them, and it would hijack this thread too...

I'm so sorry you all are dealing with this do directly. :grouphug:

rainbow April 11th, 2007 01:22 AM

I agree. It's so sad what this recall is doing to people and their pets.

It would be so much easier to reply if everyone would start their own thread in the appropriate forum. And, you would get alot more replies too. :o

We should leave this thread for Recall Information only. :)

chico2 April 11th, 2007 06:54 AM

OMG,Could someone direct me to where I can read about the Medi-Cal recall,I give Vinnie Medi-Cal Dental for treats(NO MORE!),upon vets suggestions:yell:

Mypetsrmykids April 11th, 2007 11:03 AM

More recalls today....isn't it obvious that companies aren't coming forward unless they're forced to??? On Pet Connection, I read that an independent vet had some food tested because of a cat that got ill. It was not on the recall list but it came out positive with melamine. They reported these results. Now, these foods were officially added to the list. Please people, if you have still not changed your food, you MUST stop feeding anything with wheat-gluten. You could be slowly poisoning your pet and not know it. I'm sure there are more that will never get reported because they haven't been "CAUGHT" yet!!!
