I have a wonderful 12 mo old Akita names Kitty. He is a "rescue" dog. His former owners were awful to him. When a rescue agency went to get him his collar was so small it had grown into his neck. (Apparently this is fairly common in stray/abused dogs  ) My firned works for the "rescue" agency and knew I had taken in 2 cats already and asked if I wanted a dog. I said ok, and met her at the vets office. The dog had to be tranquilized just to get it to the vet. It had to have the collar taken off as well as some dental work and had several infected cuts on its hind legs. The vets office got everything started and medications. We took the dog home and a lovely $3,000USD bill arrived about 2 weeks later.
We didn't have any of the money as we had JUST bought a new house and had both of the other cats neutered. Talking to a friend about it she told me not to worry. She managed to get friends, neighbors, coworkers and even strangers to donate money to help cover the bill. We ended up paying $20.00 after all the donations.
Well the publicity that this fundraiser generated created quite a stir among the neighborhood association about having a banned dog in the neighborhood. (Apparently Akitas are banned almost as frequently as PitBulls and German Shepards) Well, once again my wonderful friend, (who wishes to remain anonymous) stepped to the plate and got over 500 people to sign a petition to ban breed bans in the neighborhood. It passed with some restrictions as to training and previous offenses.
So, in short, thank you to all the poeple of Silverwood who helped save a dog..TWICE....And I am truly greatful to all those who have helped out. My son LOVES Kitty and we have so much fun playing with him!
