Kitten Development Stages – Pet Tip 249

When we bring a kitten home for the first time to adopt it as a pet, it should be between nine and twelve weeks old. This is so the kitten has a chance to spend time with its mother and so that the kitten becomes socialized with its littermates and learns proper kitten behaviour. But what happens before the kitten comes home? This article will outline some of the important milestones in kittenhood in an effort to familiarize you with some of the stages of kitten development.

Kittens are born blind and deaf and they remain that way for around the first fourteen days of their lives. They use their sense of smell to find their way toward their mothers for nourishment and heat. They really need to stay close to their mothers for these first few weeks as they are unable to regulate their own body temperature. The umbilical cord typically falls off after the first few days of life.

The last to join our house... Asker is actually Fagan's little sister, 2 litters behind.  I caught her sleeping in a tree at about 5 weeks old, and had got her for a neighbour.  The neighbour then decided about 2 months later that she was unable to care for her so I insisted that I take her back.  She spent the first few months here hiding as the kids that had her really tormented her and she spent most of her first months under a bed.  But here we are years later and she is so much better, in fact she now comes running to meet my parents when they come to visit, meowing and rolling on the couch beside them for petting.  She makes noises every time you touch her and always has something to tell you.  Although she hangs back at play time a bit until the older boys are tired out, she does love to play string and laser.  She, like her older brother, also loves to drink out of the faucet.  She's not much for treats, or fancy toys... just a good old belly rub and someone to talk to.  She is just a beautiful little cat, and I am so glad she came back to stay with us!
