Kittens and Birth Infections – Pet tip 241

When kittens are born they are extra small and fragile. This increases their potential of becoming ill or getting an infection. Infections in newborn kittens are quite serious as their bodies are small and they have not built up adequate immunity against many diseases or potential infections that may harm them. This article will focus on three infections that can affect newborn kittens; umbilical infections, toxic milk syndrome and septicemia.

When a female cat (aka a queen) gives birth, she will bite open the amniotic sac that surrounds the kitten. She will then chew through the umbilical cord of the kitten. Normally there are no problems.

Smoke is the smallest of our herd... and the loudest.  If you were to hear her growl and hiss at the boys you would swear we had a jaguar!  She had a rough start, was cross-eyed and lost her brother after only being here a week.  But she snuggled right in with her big sister Windy.  She loves to play string and get cuddles on the downstairs carpet as long as you get down and roll around with her.  I love that she is such a picky eater that I have to remove all crumbled food as only whole kibble is satisfactory.  And I love that when I snuggle her close she purrs like a locomotive.  I also love the little coos she does when you approach her to pet her and when she uses the cabinets and windows as her own little treadmill.  And that she has always been and always will be Daddy's girl.
