Pet Tip

Dog is a Crotch Sniffer – Pet tip 245

Most dog owners are aware that dog noses are extremely sensitive. This is due to the quantity of olfactory or ‘smell’ receptors in a dog’s nose. Whereas humans have around five million olfactory receptors, dogs have two hundred and twenty million. This makes their noses exponentially more sensitive than a human’s. Most times a dog’s sensitive nose works to our benefit. All kinds of dogs are used as service dogs to help humans find missing people, sniff out explosives, drugs etc. They can smell people coming from quite a distance and alert us to their presence. There are some embarrassing occasions however, when a dog’s nose is just too sensitive from our human perspective. Most notably this occurs when dogs try to sniff humans in their private areas.

This behaviour is a common one in dogs and equally common is the fact that it upsets most dog owners. The reason some dogs sniff at a human’s private parts is the same reason they sniff the private parts of other dogs. We know that when they smell other dogs in this way they can tell the sex, rank (is the dog more dominant or submissive) age and other information about the dog.

Pepino was found on the streets of the inner city of Los Angeles by a police officer. He was bleeding, starving, had lost his coat and could barely walk. He as 17 mos old.
A trip to the Humane Society produced a recommendation that he be euthanized.....too far gone. Thankfully, this lady cop took him to a vet she knew, where he was bathed, fed and cared for.
She brought this little guy to a Rescue at  Petsmart where I was shopping. My  little pal, named Bri, adopted from a local dog pound, had  lost her life to an  illness that veterinarians could not  defeat a year earlier.
This left me with my constant travel pal, Sinja, a rescue dog from  a shelter.  Both  Sinja and Bri stayed with me after my divorce.
I knew that Sinja needed a new a pal, we both missed Bri. One look at  Pepino and I knew he was meant to come home with me. The lady police officer told me she knew my dog skills would give this little guy the chance he needed.
And it has been a ride! Little Pepino came to me with only 2 teeth ( at 17mos of age), has skin conditions and assorted little health challenges.
But  with holistic food and supplements he has come a long way...and  Sinja has a buddy  that goes with her, and me everywhere !
