Service Dogs and Autistic Children – Pet Tip 253

Dogs help humans in so many ways. They help with companionship, with tasks that they carry out for us and sometimes they help make every day living much easier. Perhaps the best demonstration of this fact is when dogs help people with disabilities. Many of us have seen dogs helping blind people and many have heard of dogs that feel when a seizure in an epileptic person is about to occur and then protect them from injury. Dogs can also help aid autistic children and parents of autistic children in many ways as well. Recent studies suggest that the prevalence of autistic children in Canada may be 1 in 165 children or higher. Therefore, many people may well personally know of an autistic child in their extended family, or know of friends or acquaintances that have an autistic child. So how can dogs help these autistic children?

The National Service Dogs (NSD) organization in Ontario Canada, is one of the best organizations that specifically help train dogs to make the lives of autistic children better. You might be wondering how a service dog can be useful to autistic children

Penny was my very best friend. She was by my side for everything. She slept in my bed with her head on the pillow. She waited for me to shower, lying on my towels by the bathtub. She sat on my knee every car ride. She slept on my clothes when I was out at night so she could smell me. She loved to eat chicken (just like me) and every other kind of meat. She loved to sleep (just like me) anywhere it was comfortable, preferably with her head on a pillow. She would attack you when you went out the door because she didn't like you to leave. She ran around crazy every night at 9:00pm because she wanted a snack. She also loved Craig even though he bugged her a lot. She came for our Wedding pictures and looked beautiful in a bow the same color as the bridesmaids'.  She was the love of my life, and Craig even said I loved her more than I love him. She meant everything to me, and I miss her so much. I took her home and put her in the back yard under the trees, with flowers I planted all around her, and a stone that reads, "My Beloved Pet - PENNY". I know that she is happy now because she can run and eat all she wants. I just wish she was here for me to hold, even though I hold her in my heart. I love you Penny.
