Somebody making sense in the Government!

ATTORNEY GENERAL HAS "NO SOLUTION" TO PROTECT THE PUBLIC FROM DOG ATTACKS
>
>
>
>(Queen's Park), October 4, 2004 - "Attorney General Michael Bryant is
>avoiding victims of dog attacks and dog owners across the province that are
>calling on him to explain his contradictory claims concerning dog attacks.
>No leadership is being provided at the provincial level," said Joe Tascona,
>P.C. Attorney General Critic for Ontario.
>
>
>
>On August 29, 2004, with much fanfare, Bryant in considering a
>province-wide ban on pit-bulls stated "if we are banning or otherwise
>restricting otherwise dangerous weapons, why would we not include these
>animals as well?"
>
>
>
>While the public waited, and further incidents of dog attacks continued,
>Bryant looked to municipalities for direction. Bryant applauded the City
>of Windsor for passing a by-law banning pit bulls. Bryant stated "It sends
>to me, a positive message towards a province-wide ban. I don't think it is
>fair that the unwanted pit bulls in Windsor would end up in London or
>Chatham."
>
>
>
>On October 1, 2004, Bryant shifted his focus and is now considering jailing
>and increasing fines for dog-owners. Bryant stated "If you're not caring
>for your dog, and something very serious happens, you're going to pay the
>price."
>
>
>
>"As Attorney General, Bryant had a golden opportunity to lead but has
>failed to ensure that reforms will be implemented for a comprehensive bite
>prevention strategy that encourages responsible ownership of all breeds
>which will protect the public," said Tascona.
>
>
>
>In light of the Attorney General's failure to do anything, Tascona went on
>to say that there will be many questions that Bryant will have to answer
>such as:
>
>
>
>§ Will Bryant provide municipalities with the tools needed for effective
>animal control should breed specific legislation be enacted across the
>province?
>
>§ How will Bryant respond to aggressive dogs that are found among any breed
>or crossbreed?
>
>§ How will Bryant respond should breed specific legislation and breed bans
>prove not to be effective solutions to the problem of dog attacks?
>
>§ How and when will Bryant implement a comprehensive program of education,
>training and legislation encouraging responsible ownership of all breeds?
>
>§ Will Bryant implement a comprehensive bite prevention strategy that
>encourages responsible ownership of all breeds?
>
>
>
>"The Attorney General's wait and see attitude towards vicious dog attacks
>will not put to rest the tremendous concern across Ontario about safety.
>Ontarians are concerned about bad dogs in general and irresponsible owners.
> The government's objectives should be two fold. First, to promote and
>support responsible dog ownership and not enact laws that unfairly targets
>responsible owners. Second, to encourage and foster the implementation of
>non-breed specific dangerous dog by-laws that can actually be enforced by
>municipalities. I will wait and see what the Attorney General will do, if
>anything, in regards to provincial laws," Tascona concluded.

Well imagine a politician that is backpedalling well I think this is a good start for putting responsible ownership in the forefront of this BSL issue. Sounds like he shot his mouth off and is not being supported by the rest of the government

So angry at with the local radio station

On my way to work today I was listening to the news...the news guy says "another muscle dog attack". so of course I perk up, just to see what he has to say. He proceeds to tell a story about a cop stopping someone, the person took off so he ( the cop) follows them and the guy runs in the house and the cop follows him into his house and the dog attacks the cop. It was a bull mastiff. Of course they focus on the dog attack not what the guy did to make the cop stop him. Now I ask who is at fault? The dog? I don't think so. The point I am trying to make is that the focus was on the dog attacking, not if the guy murdered someone , or robbed a bank or what. I wanted to write the radio station and ask what they think makes news. pffffft

Remember tho - he is the Attorney General critic - and is from the opposition - criticizing the other party is what they do - there is a health critic, justice critic etc etc.

The good thing is that this stuff is actually getting out to the public which was not happening before. I think they are more concerned now with the financial ramifications of a BSL since they are constantly whining about money, that they dont have any how can they justify letting people with life threatening illnesses sit and wait for treatment and use the money to ban a breed. I realize they are different agencies but it was just an example to get my point across.

I was just curious..are any of you guys aware of the petition that is being provided by the Dog Legislation Council of Canada?
The petition can be found here:
http://www.doglegislationcouncilcanada.org/
There is a link that reads "petition" in blue..and will open up a PDF file...I suggest you all try to get some signatures...the last date to get it into the main office is on October 31st 2004...

I'm hoping to go around my neighborhood and get a few of these sheets filled out... they're not gonna win without a fight that's for sure!
