Benadryl

I got the dosage for Odin to see if it would help with his allergies. I can give him up to 50mg a day. I started with 25mg for the last three days and don't really see any improvement. Should I up it again? Or what a little longer to see if it takes a while to have an effect.

I have read many times on this site that Benadryl is safe, which it is, but when I reasearched it myself on more than one occasion, I read that it is just not that effective as a histamine blocker in dogs. It "took the edge off" for Gypsy and allowed her to sleep, but it really didn't work that well.

I would ask vet. I have Benadryl on hand in case my dog has a reaction to a bee sting.

Yeah...maybe I will call the vet. I was hoping it would stop him from chewing his nails and scratching...but it didn't.

Hmm. Benadryl works really well for Raj, except in the worst of the seasonal allergy season. That is when she needs a shot (cortisteroid). The shot gives her relief for a LONG time. The vet said it would last a month, but it lasted well beyond that. Maybe you should ask your vet if Odin's symptoms are severe and chronic enough to warrant one.

Blaze was given Benadryl for itching from mange for months it worked great for him. I gave one 25mg in the morning and one 25mg at night or evening,if he needed it sooner. I would sometimes give 3 only on bad days but not everyday. Blaze was only 10 weeks old when we started this and used Benadryl till he was 8 mths again great for us.
