Unhappy Old Cocker, New Behavioural Problems

Hi, I'm hoping someone can help. Our 9 year old cocker spaniel has begun displaying some unfavourable behaviour. She has recently started getting into the garbage can whenever she is left alone - she had never done that with a closed garbage can before, although she does pick up a lot of trash.

She has also taken to having more accidents on the floor. We live in the country and I work from home - she can go out whenever she wants, but doesn't seem to tell me she has to go.

Most of this behaviour appeared after we added a cat to our clan a few months ago. We suspected that this might have to do with the new addition, but it shows no signs of abating. Short of completely modifying the garbage can or emptying it every time we leave the house, I'm not sure what to do.

She's also pretty territorial about food. So in addition to all of this, she started barking a lot more once the cat came on the scene. And now we have TWO animals competing for food as if they're starved.

Does anyone have suggestions? I love them both, but between the two of them I'll go nuts...

Thanks

Alyaw, as with all sudden behavior changes, your dog should be seen by a vet and have a thorough check-up including blood tests to rule out any underlying medical issues. In the meantime, can you put the garbage can in a pantry or in another room behind a closed door?
