Help my pigeon's toe is majorly inflamed for weeks
hi, i breed wild pigeons on my balcony, the male father had wrapped his middle toe with something and in pulilng it cut through a lot of the toe.
I got much of it off about a week ago, but every singe his tow has become more and more "bubbly" now with three MAJORLY large balls growing around and on that toe, it seems to be getting worse. Whats gonig on? is it still wrapped somehow and losing circulation so so so slowyl over weeks? Should i do something with him/his toe??? Is this the way they heal maybe (hopefully) ? any advice would be appreciated, i though he'd be getting better but it looks as if the toe is getting worse, he can barely put any pressure on it, he hops around. |

how do you breed wild birds? if you can catch him, take him to the vet for antibiotics, sounds like the toe is inflamed and more than likely the vet will snip it off and cauterize it.

I can only suggest to take him to the vets as I am certain he is in terrible pain. Don't you just wish they could tell you how much they are actually hurting?

It's not unusual for a bird to lose a toe, neilster, and they do just fine without them. But in this case, because the area seems inflamed or infected (the growths you mentioned) your best bet is to find a vet that specializes in birds and have it looked at. When you make the appt, don't describe the bird as 'wild' because vets sometimes won't treat wild birds--so for the appt, the bird is your 'racer'

thank for the replies. I do catch him, and I'm not adverse to trying whatever it takes... i'm sure the vet wouldn't touch him and i don't want to risk losing him. The bubbles are losing color today, are they filled with fluid? Can i try to bust them with a sharp razor?
He certainly doesn't look like he's in pain, at least not compared to a mammal, besides hopping i don't see any different in his protective attitude etc. is it too late to bath it in something to hopefully loosen the skin around where it is tight? |

Likely they're swollen tissue and lancing them will only make the swelling worse. Don't try to do surgery yourself--there are vets out there that will treat domestic pigeons, you just need to find the proper clinic. Where are you located?
It's too late to treat with epsom salts if you have that much swelling--it's been too many weeks.

Just had another idea--if you can find a pigeon fancier in your area, they can probably help you treat your bird.

Just to let everyone know i started putting antibitotic cream on the pigeons foot last week and it is MUCH MUCH better, he's no longer limping, barely hopping, and the swelling has gone down and he looks much happier.
Thanks so much for your help. |

What are you putting on his foot? Is the cream from a vet? You should not just put something on, without consulting a vet. It may be healing now, but could pose more issues in the long run.
