Something is wrong with Onnie, scared
I am freaked out. I took Onnie to the vet yesterday and she expressed his anal glands, said he had coccidia and prescribed him meds for 2 weeks. She also took a swab of his stool (internally I guess since I did not have a sample).
Since the vet apptment he has been very aloof, in hiding but I figured it was just normal post vet stress. Yesterday I spent all day cleaning and disinfecting all literboxes, the floor surrounding them and basically any surface that I could with diluted bleach. At around 10pm I tried to find Onnie and after an exhaustive search finally found him under the covers of the bed in the basement, he was excessively trying to lick his rear end. The comforter of the bed was streaked with very foul smelling poop so I stripped the bed and did the laundry. His bum wasn't very clean so I wiped him but other than that he seemed to just want to be alone. Before going to bed I noticed another smear/streak of poo on the floor in my moms room so i cleaned that as well. I tried sitting with Onnie before going to bed because he stil seemed out of sorts and even tried playing with him but he just wasnt up for it. He alternated from just sitting there to frantically trying to lick his rear end. At 4am this morning the craziness began. I woke up to Onnie having galloped in the room, meowing frantically this high pitched meow then almost yodelling. He ran into the bathroom and cowered behind the toilet. He was panting, shaking. I thought maybe he had a cling on or something? I sat with him for maybe 15 mins but he was still not very calm so I went to investigate. I found nothing all over the house except next to the litterbox a brown streak again but no evidence of him being in the litterbox at all. I sat with him for another half hour till he calmed down then pulled him out to check him out. He would *not* lift his tail for me and pretty much hankered down in such a way it was pretty much impossible. Nonetheless I wiped him and got a quick glance, he was a little dirty but nothing crazy. He promptly went back behind the toilet and an hour later i reluctantly went back to bed. At about 7am he ran under my bed, 10 mins later he ran, while cowering, under my desk where he scooted and again a large brown streak left behind. He then ran out of the room. When I went to find him he was cowering behind the toilet in another bathroom downstairs curling himself into a tighter ball everytime I reached for him. He was again shaking from breathing so hard. I called and canceled my commitments this morning and am waiting for the vet to open in 15mins. I'm worried maybe the vet hurt him when she was getting the sample or expressing his glands. He has had his glands expressed before and never acted this way!! It's almost as if he's leaking stool because he hasn't actually gone to the litterbox between all these incidents and I've cleaned him after every single one. It's not the mess or streaking that's freaking me out it's how absolutely terrified he is and how he just curls into this tight shaking ball when I try to approach him after one of these episodes for lack of a better word. Please excuse me for the long rambly post, I'm just so tired and so worried.

Oh no, poor Onnie. It is so painful for them.
Is he seeing a different vet than the one who expressed his glands? I read somewhere that cats glands should be expressed differently than dogs as they are much smaller, so hopefully the vet did it correctly . Sending lots of for him. Poor boy.

Thanks L4H, no it is the same vet they have had. Weve used the same one for almost 10 yrs now (with my previous cat too). She is very kind and well informed, she used to run a cat only clinic in T.O. for several years so I am confident in her. well normally I am . Now I'm worried she did something wrong or was too forceful or something because previously he has been ok after she expressed his glands.
I feel so horrible he wasn't in pain before the vet, he was happy content with diarrhea yes but he wasnt in pain. Now he seems to be in so much pain and is terrified I know I took him to the vet for his own good but somehow I feel guilty, especially when he shrinks away from me when i try to touch him. Would the vet open already

Just wondering if vet maybe caused a fissure (slight tear) in Onnie's rectum when when sampled him to get some stool, or anal glands are just really irritated. Maybe a dab of polytropic or polysporin or vaseline on his rectum would help a bit? Could be wiping to clean him (with toiletpaper?) is aggravating the rectum and anal glands---maybe a soft cloth or cotton ball with a little vaseline or olive oil would be less irritating. It sounds like some sort of soreness there that's really bugging him, and the passing a bit of stool is stinging and really hurts, causing him pain and making him shake. Coccidia can cause a really sore rectum. Hope Onnnie's better soon.

The vet won't answer the phone They were supposed to be open at 8am
Catlover2, that's what I thought too yesterday after he soiled the comforter last night and I wiped him (Ive been using somewhat textured cloths but I will try something more smooth next time), I did actually dab some polysporin on thinking there may have been a tear, it was quite red and angry looking. My poor boy From what I read from the pamphlet provided by the vet coccidia rarely affects adult cats unless theyre immunosupressed, which Onnie is not, so I'm very confused there too. I also havent read anywhere that the coccidia can cause a sore bum, thanks for letting me know. You don't think any of this could be a reaction to the meds do you?

Update: They finally answered the phone but no vet today she's in Calgary doing training..seriously tho they could have answered the phone even tho their boss wasnt there, grr.
I was gettting ready to take him to another vet and locked him into the one room (so he wouldnt keep hiding on me). When I opened the door I was a) greeted by the most disguisting overpowering smell, and more importantly b) Onnie was sitting on the window sill and not cowering on the floor!!!! Sure enough my nose led me to the great offender, a poop on the floor, half on the carpet and half on the air vent (no wonder its stinking up the room something fierce ). Onnie seems to me so much more relieved now he's still frazzled looking but I put him on his tree and he's no longer cowering. He's looking out of the window now. I have never ever in my life been so happy to clean poop off of the carpet. Thank God. I think I will wait then for my vet tomorrow 10am and let Onnie get some much needed rest. poor boy had a very very long night. He looks exhausted but won't sleep for now. I'll be happy once he settles into a nap. Thank you all I was seriously having a meltdown. I can't describe how sad and alarming his meowing was, was breaking my heart.

Thanks for the info L4, maybe they are infected I don't know. What gets me is that he was fine before the vet i mean besides the diarrhea (but he didnt seem to mind). So I can't imagine his glands were that bad when I took him in? I expected them to be full because of not having firm stool for so long which was the case but I wasn't expecting how he has been behaving.
I'm almost scared to give him his one pill today. I'm a little unsure of the tech she said he may be trying to pass the "worms". I said, "arent coccidia not worms?" The pamphlet I got from the vet specifically says they are often confused with worms but are not worms. She said no they are worms living in the intestine. I didn't feel like arguing, or getting technical over wording (coccidia= protozoa). Also I'm unsure if her theory over him 'passing the dead worms' is true either because according to the papers that came with the meds they don't actually kill the coccidia but rather interfere with the reproductive cycle so that the cat can fight it itself, it explains that this is why treatment can take up to 3 weeks and cleaning surfaces to prevent reinfection is so important.

The polysporin I think has given him some relief and would just keep putting it on after you clean him from every bowl movement. Coccidia does give the most foul-smelling poops, and really makes the rectum sore. I would keep giving him the pills to clear it up. Glad to hear he's somewhat better and at least not cowering and hiding from you.

Onster,,Onnie's glands may have become impacted ( substance is more solid than liquid) so his poor little bum may be tender from expressing the glands..the original description of the brown streaks and smell sounds more like anal gland goobers than poop..with his bum being sore he may have been in pain trying to poop but now that he has you may find the glands stop leaking and he will be a much happier little camper. I agree with the others on continue with the polysporin or vaseline.

Thanks all for your continued info/advice/support. I'm not gonna lie I called my mom in Egypt this morning as I was near tears over what to do
Ok so I had to go out after he passed the stool and seemed better on his cat tree. I locked him into the one room so that he wasn't moving all over the place while I was gone. When I came back he was one the couch, in a tight ball but not sleeping. I pet him and all, no purring from him but at least not cowering. If my hand goes anywhere near his bum though he sort of scoots himself inwards and under so I cant see anything. He really is quite uncomfortable poor boy, after that he ran, tail between his legs and low to the ground, to the kitchen. He then started meowing desperately to go out . Of course I did not let him. I tried to give him food but he's not interested. The only thing he would take is some cream cheese, I thought ok better than nothing. I also gave him his pill at that point. It's hard to describe but he's keeping him bum down tail tucked always and keeps scooting inwards then maybe excessively licking. For now I set up a litterbox in the laundry room for him and some food and put him in there. I havent applied any more polysporin/Vaseline yet because he wont let me and I don't wanna stress him out. Aslan would it have been obvious to the vet that it's impacted?

Onster, I can imagine how scared you were for Onnie. I'm so glad he's feeling better. When I began reading this, I first thought maybe the vet hurt him while she was getting his sample. I hope he continues to feel well.

Onster on initial inspection not neccessarily once she started squeezing it would tho..normal glands are liquid,,if it's impacted it is more of a paste like substance, and phew....if really impacted it is even harder. Main thing i would be watching for is any bleeding, which you haven't mentioned....i think poor little man has a sore bum and it's gonna take a couple days.

14+, don't worry I won't let him out. He hasn't gone out in over 2 weeks anyway as Ive been much 2 busy (and as always when he goes out he goes with me not alone). I was very surprised that he wanted out
Thanks TQ L4H I am 100% taking him to his vet tomorrow at 10am. If nothing at all I need some pain relievers for him or something. If anything changes I shall for sure take him to emerg vet. I keep checking in on him. He didnt move from his one spot for two hours. I brought water up to him and first he wasnt interested but I kept putting a few drops on his paws or under his chin for him to lick up and then he actually started lapping up the water. I then left him alone for another hour or so and when i came in I brought in his kibble (his wet food was with him the whole time but he wasnt interested). He eagerly gobbled it up then jumped down to his wet food and ate some of that too. That is after he started licking his tail excessively he seems almost frantic about the licking. I finally just said "Onnie" and he kind of snapped out of it. Throughout all this though it is very evident that a) he really doesnt want to move, it must hurt and b) any movement is always with tail tucked under and bum low to the ground. After he ate I patted his kitty bed that I brought into the room and he did jump in but then again with the stairs at tail, pauses for a few moments then lick lick lick lick. I stayed with him till he stopped and laid down, albeit with his tail tightly coiled around him. I'm happy he ate and drank and I will keep checking on him throughout the night. If there are any other updates/changes I will post for sure. Other than that tomorrow morning can not come fast enough

Oh, ouch! Poor Onnie! And poor mommy! It's so hard not to worry when they're obviously hurting!
I'm glad he at least ate and drank! And I hope the night passes more restfully for both of you! Good luck at the vet tomorrow!

Ouch!!!!
The vet was very sweet this morning and came into the exam room quickly, she said he was worried about Onnie too . Anyway she said when she expressed the glands on Tuesday they were full but didn't seem impacted/infected or anything. Like aslan said tho, she thought the brown streaks I was describing was actually anal gland secretion.
She then took him into the back room to see for herself. I heard the worst cat scream ever When she came back she said his left gland was full again so she expressed it again (in one day they can fill up???) and the right one she said when she expressed it blood came out and that's when he screamed She gave me metacam drops to give him for one week, she wants to see him again in a week also. She Infused his anal glands with something (convenia?) to keep down inflammation. In addition, she gave him a subcutaneous shot of Metacam. So seems like he has the same thing Jasper suffered with, L4H. :goodvibes : for Onnie and thanks all for your well wishes.

OMG! poor Onnie I certainly hope the meds will clear it up and this isn't going to have to be an ongoing thing. I'll be surprised if you will be able to get Onnie in a carrier the next time! Poor guy, and you too, hearing those screams! Not good!

Oh Onster, how awful for you to have sit there and hear your poor boy in pain. Hopefully the meds will set him right again quickly now. Fingers crossed that he does not react to anything. You're such a good mommy, he'll be okay, he knows that you're helping him and love him.
