Hey All,
Just wondering here, what is considered diarrhea in dogs? My puppy always has very solid poo's, not too soft nor hard, but every so often after she takes 3 poo's before her next feeding time, her poop gets very very mushy, not water but consistency of soft serve ice cream. Other then that she is perfectly normal, eats regularly not eating any table scraps other than the occasional banana or apple piece. She plays like a maniac, she drinks lots (peeing every 20 mins), happy go lucky pup. ![]() Her food is Innova Puppy and she eats all her food everytime. |

I'd consider that pasty poo, definitely not diarrhea.
For me, diarrhea is watery, slimey poo that lands in a puddle, not in a pile. Diarrhea may have clumps of mucous, undigested food, a higher bile content (that mustardy yellow colour), or a general discoloration (lack of colour, darkening of colour). It lacks any solidity. Pasty poo can have varying levels of pasty. Like toothpaste. Gel based pastes are more pliable than non-gel based pastes. But it remains in tubular shape. Diarrhea would lack any kind of tubular shape. Bodhi sometimes has a very nicely shaped poo, great in consistency, colour and such... with at the end of it a bit more pasty poo. Kind of like an 'after-thought' to the whole bowel moving business. It was there in the intestines, and hadn't been there as long as the other stuff to have the water removed from it. As long as the majority of your pup's poo is good and solid, and there's that 'afterthought' business, I wouldn't call it diarrhea. What you might want to do is check, when your pup has such an 'afterthought', whether the pup had a bone that had marrow, or a piece of rawhide or pig ear or something after a meal. Bodhi will sometimes get a bit of pasty poo after eating marrow from a bone. So the 'afterthought' is caused by the higher fat content in the marrow, not by the food. And as soon as it's passed her system, the poo returns to normal, solid texture. |

Oh hey! Yah I gave Luna a pig hide bone last night. Maybe I'll not give that to her, I usually give her Cow tenden and her poop is good.
Her last poo was right inbetween pasty and diarrhea, it had some 'hold' to it but was mush, but only a tiny bit. So I'll definitely take that pig hide out of the diet. THANKS for the help! Cheers |
