Dog facing surgery needs new home

(sorry the pic is blurry)

A dog losing his leg because of neglect is in need of a home.

The year-and-a-half-old Collie mix was spotted limping around by Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (OSPCA) investigator Bonnie Bishop recently in the front yard of its first owner while she was on her way to another call.

Bishop stopped to investigate and found out the dog's left, front leg had been run over by a lawn mower sometime during the summer, but the owner never got the pet any medical attention.

"This is a very serious case of neglect," Bishop said. "The dog was denied any medical treatment."

The accident crushed the bones in the dog's leg and severed tendons, leaving it completely useless to this day.

The canine equivalent to its wrist flops around and the bones above it never healed.

Bishop said there is no choice left other than to amputate the leg. The surgery is scheduled to be performed today.

Bishop hopes there is someone out there willing to take the dog on as a foster owner and eventually, as a pet.

Although most people might hesitate to take on a dog missing a leg, Bishop says they deal with the loss surprisingly well.

She says the dog will no doubt be back on its feet the same day of the surgery.

Bishop knows what she is talking about because she has three, three-legged dogs at home herself. All of them were dogs she found on the job.

She also knows several people in the area who have three-legged dogs.

"They do so well with only three legs," Bishop said. "The adjustment is so natural for them."

Bishop explained that losing a front leg is more of a challenge than a hind leg because they carry more of a dog's weight.

The Collie-type dog will need some time to recover from the surgery, but should be available to move into a foster home soon.

In late September, three dogs who survived serious neglect were put up for adoption.

A Bichon Frise, Shih Tzu and a pug likely had little more than access to food and water, while another Bichon Frise needed to be euthanized because of its injuries.

Carol Link, branch manager of the SD&G branch of the OSPCA, said all three dogs have since been found new homes.

Some people just shouldn't have pets

I am so happy the pup is now getting the medical attention it needs.

Of course I love the Cornwall SPCA because that's where sweet, lovable Jasper was adopted from

He's already adapted to walking on three, he'll be fine. Glad he's getting a second chance. That must have been an excrutiating injury. Stupid idiot ex-owner.
