In an otherwise healthy cat, would giardia and tapeworms be dangerous over the short term? If not, you might still want to treat them all, but spread the cost out over a few months... I know how expensive it can be to treat multiples...

Oh that sucks. I feel your pain.
What meds did the vet give you forGiardia? Hopefully he will cut you a deal on price. My feel would be that if the cats share close quarters (they do) then I would treat them all. Sharing litterboxes, bedding, grooming are all ways of spreading it. Great that the vet caught it. It's sometimes not easy to identify and can be pricey to send out to test.

Cpietra I dont know alot about the Giardia but the tapeworm from what I understand is only caught when the cat ingests a contaminated flea?? so unless they all ate the contaminated flea/fleas then I think its unlikley that they would all get it. The Giardia is likely a different story!
Your so right when it rains is poors!

Oh man, that sucks. Especially since you have so many who can also be potentially infected.

Get rid of the source of tapeworms.
First of all it's important to get rid of the source of the tapeworms---either through flea control or restricting your cats from hunting rodents. Without doing this, reinfection will happen.
Here's a good website on the two different kind of tapeworms we see in North America: http://www.tape-worm.info/ |

well I know how Fiona got the tape worm..she was a stray and who knows how long she lived on the street. My vet also thinks that it may have been either fleas or a prey she ate...whatever the culprite...its a done deal and I have to get her and the others all treated...My vet suggested that we only treat the others for giardia because tapeworm is very hard to transmit...is this possible?

that is sooo not what happened at my home but , if you're on a tight budget , I would follow your vet's advice and only treat the others if they do catch tapeworms later .... it takes a while to see because tapeworms will only "come out" once they're full grown
