Are all cavities black??
I think Gizzy may have a cavity on the top right side of his mouth (molar, is it?) But it's not black, it's white and not smooth-looking, kinda-hard to describe and don't think I can get a picture. Help?

Does he seem to be in pain? Is it red around the gums? Is he still eating normally? I think that unlike humans their cavities are below the gumline.

I don't think he is in pain. Gums aren't red. Eating like the little piglet he has become. Feeding wet food for the time being.
I did just buy some Halo Liv-a-Littles Cat treats, and he seems to be reluctant to eat them. Like they are too hard or something. He will only eat 2 at the most, if I give him more he will play soccer with them instead. Would this be an obvious sign? |

It could be ...has he had them or any other hard treats before and ate them with no problem?
Can you put your finger in his mouth and touch where it is? If so, wrap some gauze around your finger and press on the gum. Or else, try it with a Q-Tip as long as he isn't going to freak out and bite you. |

I just noticed that Gizzy is only two yr old so he shouldn't have any serious dental problems at that age.

He has no problem with Whiskas Temptations, and these Halo ones are kinda kibble-like in texture. A few months ago I bought these Zuke's Natural Purrz and they kept falling out of his mouth, had a hard time trying to bite into them. So I just gave them to Forest all the time.
I just tried to touch the tooth in question with a Q-tip twice and he snapped his jaw each time so I think that might be a sign of pain? Vet time? |

Good luck and keep us posted. |

Plaque is a whiteish-yellow discolouration that may be uneven & lumpy, if it calcifies - hardens into tarter that will promote tooth decay leading to cavities either under the gum line (where most cats experience them) or visible on the surface of the tooth.
What is the colour of the rest of his teeth? Sparkly white, bit yellowish, obvious tarter? Quote:
They usually do chatter their teeth when it hurts. You might want to get him in for a dental cleaning, mention the symptoms and they will likely take xrays to check under the gum line. If it is a reabsorptive lesion (where the gums are actually absorbing the affected tooth) it will need to come out.

Calcifies... that word seems to describe what I'm seeing. Kinda looks white with dimply lines running through it. His fangs are pretty white but with a dark line going down each, and the rest have tarter build up that are yellowish in colour.
I didn't try to touch his other teeth, that might have been helpful, doh! I'll try tomorrow and update. |
