Teaching Recall ... help

Could anyone tell me the most successful and fastest way of teaching a dog recall. Ive been practicing with my 8month old lab/cross. Ive tethered him in the yard on a 20ft dog flex, everything was going well, treats in hand, sit, stay then "come Beau!" he would do this outside, in the house also, I thought great, time to practice off the leash in the yard.
Everything was great until he heard people in the next yard, (mine is not fenced in) off he went, off he went hurtling down the yard, Im standing there saying Beau come ! and nothing zilch, no response as he tramples through the neighbors plants . Ive been at this about 2 weeks now, rewarding, happy voice on return, I really thought he'd got it, but noop, any ideas anyone ?

My pom is 5 and his recall isn't perfect every time. I certainly wouldn't trust a puppy.

The most important thing to remember is this - do NOT use the word come unless you are in a position to back it up. If your dog is across the yard barking at a squirrel, use any other word you want or go and get the dog. Every time you use the word "come" and your dog doesn't - you are teaching him/her that it is a command that can be obeyed when he/she feels like it.

Find yourself a good training class where you can work on these things with lots and lots of distractions. It will make a ton of difference.

Do not trust dog off leash unless they have solid recall. If there is a distraction, they will NOT obey you! ..

When teaching keely recall (It still isnt perfect)I kept her on a 15ft leash. I would throw a ball, A another toy a treat. And tell her "COME". If she didnt. i MADE her come. Until I would throw a ball, a treat, a toy. Anything really and she would come without hesitation. I practised by getting my dad to be a distraction. My brother pulling in the driveway in his car was a practice for her recall skills. I put her in alot of everyday situiations. Right now we have a rabit problem in my yard. Im teaching her to come to me even if she sees a rabbit (She has a high prey drive and REAAAALLY wants the rabbit) .. Although I know She willnot be off leash in my yard because of the potental rabbits lurking about..

Good luck!
