Which of these dog foods is best??
I am currently feeding my dogs Royal Canine Mini Adult formula and I find it to be somewhat on the pricey side. I have been looking into some other foods and am considering a switch but don't know which of these is best : Canidae, Actrium, or kirkland signature? They are all within a lower price range but I was wondering what people think of it. If anyone has any info about them I would like to hear what you think or have heard. Thanks!

I know that Canidae recently sold out to another company and changed it's formula. I used to recommend it, but many dogs do not do well on the new formula.
I feed Kirkland's and while it may not be the BEST food - it is darn good. My pom's coat is lovely (well - as lovely as it can be) and he is very healthy.

Out of those three options I would also recommend the Kirkland. Again, due to Canidae's formula change I would avoid that one, though it used to be a great food.

I've never heard of Actrium, and when I google it all that comes up is forum entries like this. I did see one forum post that said the main ingredient in this food is 'meat meal'. If that's true - I'd run fast and far the other direction. Meat meal (meaning unspecified animal source) could be anything from roadkill to euthanized pets. People get drawn in by the 'holistic' claims or that it has no by-products or even by the pretty pictures of the vegetables and meat chunks on the package. That's just marketing fluff - has nothing to do with what's really in the bag. For that you need to do a bit of research on dog food in general, what those ingredients really are and then read the label.
I've fed Canidae and wasn't impressed with the results.

I've heard so many good things about the Kirkland Signature brand that I decided to try it, seeing as it would save me a bundle. I'm now feeding the Chicken, Rice and Vegetable formula to my 8 dogs and they're doing great on it. They're healthy, active and have good stools. I know price isn't the only thing to consider when choosing a food, (though it definitely does enter the equation when feeding 8 large dogs!) but considering all the positive things I'd heard about it I decided to give it a try and I can now almost buy 2 bags for the price of 1 of the previous food I was using.

From the three brands you mentioned I would choose the Kirkland Signature.
I believe that Actrium is WalMart's brand in Canada. |
