Can male guinea pigs get along?

I have an opportunity to adopt a male guinea pig that was previously used for breeding. I know they are social animals so I'd like to get him a friend, however I read on one website that if a male has been mated, he will never get along with any other males ever again. Is this true? I haven't been able to find any other info about it. Would he therefore be happier as a solitary pig?

2 will get along but not 3 as the top pig usually claims one of the others as its "mate" and a 3rd is seen as the intruder in my experience

The easiest is 2 females, but 2 males is possible in a very large cage.
Have you checked Kijiji Ottawa? There are always free pigs.
Note: Lots of cage cleaning involved.....G pigs eat like piggies.
Hopefully your kids are not allergic.
Please have pets spayed and neutered,
and wearing a collar with an ID tag.

Several years ago I adopted a male guinea pig, Nibbles, who was about 5 years old. A year later I bought what I thought was a female. She was to be a breeder. Fiji and Nibbles fell in love but never had babies - I eventually discovered Fiji was a male. Never had any issues with them, in fact Nibbles was estatic to have a roommate! He gave Fiji food and treats, groomed him and helped him realize that we humans were not so bad
