Opinions please: getting a second cat: will they fight?
Hi everyone
I have a 1 year old little bugger named Montana (male cat, neutred) right now, who is very social, loves to be with people but can still be bitey at times - he is a high energy cat who loves to be in the middle of everything, and play with anything that moves I am thinking of getting a second cat (male cat, neutred), the same age, and apparently also very social, loves other cats and playfull/affectionate. I have heard about "owning 2 males" and "dominant male" cats etc. and the potential problems. Can anyone offer some advice? Would I be better off getting a female cat (spade)? Would having 2 very social male cats be a bad idea? Advice on introducing a second kitty would be appreciated Thanks Last edited by S&M; March 10th, 2009 at 11:17 AM. |

It has been my experience that males are more social than females, especially young (less than 2 years old) neutered. I have found they have been more accepting of new cats. In fact, I have found females are more dominanting than males.
I say go for it!

I think it depends on the cat. We took in a male who made life miserable for our resident female. Fortunately, our Dachshunds policed the new cat and kept the first safe. You can just never tell. The new cat was considerably larger than our first cat which didn't help - and twice the size of the Dachshunds. But you get all types of temperaments. Some dogs will never peacefully co-exist in the house, yet be best of friends outside or in neutral territory. I would try for two, but just watch them closely.

Hi S&M. Welcome back. I am so sorry it didn't work out with Dayle. I just love her too much to give her up now. From sounds of things she may not have worked out with Montana anyway. She is a very skittish kitty who only likes Mom and doesn't play much with other kitties.
Congrats on finding another playmate for Montana. That is terrific! He will love it! Is the other kitty neutered? If not I would advise you to have it done and healed before any introductions have taken place. Montana would see the new one as an interloper. Still will but if newbie is fixed not quite as badly. The best advice on introducing I can give you is this site....... http://www.squidoo.com/multi-cat-management She has dealt with lots of kitties. I am sure you will find the info you need there. If not, or if you have specific questions, feel free to ask.

Hi, I just read your question and thought I would try to give you some advice. When we adopted our cat Hank (he was a 1 yr old male, neutred) from the PEI Humane Society we were so excited. But when we introduced him to our dog, Monty...we weren't so excited. We thought he was going to kill our dog. He was very angry and try several times to attack our dog, BTW Monty is scared to death of cats and he did not like this one at all!!! But eventually things calmed down and they became "friends". By friends I mean they tolerate each other, Hank loves Monty but Monty prefers to keep his distance (he's still afraid of him). So when my sister moved back with her 10 month old male neutered cat (Hank is 3 now) we didn't think he was going to adjust very well. At first Hank growled a lot, but within a day they were playing. Hank is a very large cat compared to Little Devil but they still get along great. They kind of even each other out; Hank is bigger and stronger but Little Devil is small and fast. It's really nice to watch them play together. I know that every situation is different, but give it a try with your cats. They could be best friends.
