Kinda funny!

Hey there, I am still working away with Lindy!!
I have the trainer coming this afternoon. I am trying to get Lindy into the car for a fun walk before next week when I have to take her to the vets for her checkup and shots. No go (shocking really ) so.... I went to Safeway to get some bones as a really special treat just for the car (she says with fake and overdone excitement in her voice), they didn't have any so I bought some Rawhide sticks soaked in beef broth. Seemed like a good idea, I have heard that dogs like to chew on them. Okay so can we review! Lindy is a Sheherd cross, medium sized, she ate the thing, minimal chewing and the thing was gone, 3.2 seconds. Learning with Lindy lesson #742!!!! Apparently those sticks are for smaller dogs

Keep an eye on her - swallowing the rawhide basically whole can cause problems! I wouldn't give her rawhides at all.

It's not surprising she is reluctant to get in the car, since any car trips she had in the past took her places she didn't want to go.

My own dog was hesitant to get in the car when I first got her, since she probably thought I wouldn't bring her back, but now she hops in eagerly.

Keep coaxing her with treats, and when she does get in, just say "Good Girl" and let her out again. It will take time. Then just take her for a ride around the block and right home again with more treats and praise. She will learn that getting in the car can have good results.

You are so funny Freyja!

Well good thought with the rawhides but a definite NO NO! Intestinal blockages and poisoning not up your alley for Lindy so axe the rawhides, garbage filed!

I agree with LR you can sit in the car and her on the outside of the car...give her a little treat while she sits there then back up until you're in the car. Eventually she'll jump in if you put a treat on the seat for her.

Just sit there for a minute rewarding and praising her. This may take several times to do.

Then you can just back the car in and out the drive way a couple of time with window part way down for her to sniff the air.

Give her another treat , take her for a walk and try again later the next day or so.... build up to a drive around the block slowly. Stop BEFORE you get home and take her for a walk in the park or something.

She'll come to learn its' all 'good' to get in there

The best bones to get are the nylabones. Just make sure you get the right size for your dog to avoid problems.

If you go back to FairPlay, get Lindy a "bully stick".....they are excellent and I know Brick loves them. They are his "car" treats, and he will sit and chew one for about an hour. They are about $4.99 each, but well worth it for the peace and quiet in the car. Brick too was not keen on the car, but I took LR and Luba's advice and sat in the car with him, then just went on short little rides around the block, then to the park, and now he can go long distances with no problems!!

How did your lesson go with Jennifer??? She's awesome eh???

Thumbs up

Lindy was a different dog for this woman. She showed me how to leash correct, how to scruff. She had Rollover treats and Lindy is nuts for them.
She set me up with a plan of what to do for which behavoirs, she gave me homework for the crate, and the car. Lindy practically got her back feet into the car from not coming within 5 feet of the thing in about 10 minutes. She got super nippy with me after she left and I used the techniques and she stopped. Lindy came in the house and behaved. It was absolutely amazing!

Grabbing her by the scruff of her face with both hands so that she cannot turn her head and bite, her full attention is on you and you say, (whatever words in the right tone) "That's enough, no biting, settle down" This is the last resort after the "off", "no bite", then the leash correction and then if she doesn't stop, scruff. I was concerned about agressiveness but Jenn feels that Lindy is a big wimp and needs her confidence built up, so we have lots of tricks for that. The biting has to stop now before it becomes more serious. Jenn thinks that Lindy is most likely only 7 mos old and not 10 mos and that she is more border collie than German Shepherd dog. Interesting. At first she watched me do the knee thing with the jumping up but she decided that Lindy was doing the teenage testing the waters thing and when I walked away Lindy thought she was getting away with the behaviour.

If you go to the Dogs Deserve Better website www.dogsdeservebetter.com and wait for the intro sad picture to change to the home page, the dog on the top right hand corner looks an awful lot like Lindy. best I can do for now. I think my ex has a digital camera. I will see what I can do.
Yes! My confidence is way up. Just knowing that I can control her when she is out of hand and knowing that she is really a good dog makes me feel a lot better.
AGAIN I would like to say a great big thank you to all of you for your tremendous support. This forum has been an invaluable resource.
p.s. I didn't receive a single hurtful PM

Aww! Cute! But, no fur!

Nice looking dog too. I know it's just a similar pix, but looks like a woofer that'll make a wonderful companion!

Ohh Jane, I'm sooooo happy for you and Lindy!! I knew as soon as I met Jenn that she would be right for Lindy!!! I'm very very pleased things are looking up!!!

Lets get together next week, and I will bring my digital and take pics of Lindy for you and everyone on here ok???? We can meet at a park for a walk, the "kids" will love that!!! LOL

PM me, and we'll figure out a day and time!!

P.S. Jenn, the trainer does the scruff thing as a last resort or if the dog isn't on a leash to do the leash correction. I haven't had to use it on Brick, the leash works wonders especially with the "leave it"...omg he just totally shies away from the treat on the floor, just with the verbal!! I set him up to do "leave it" with the cat, and he KNEW, little bugger, so he just totally left Tux alone!!! LMAO Funny dog!! He's too smart for his own good!!

That would be great Chris, providing of course that I can get Lindy in the car by then. We could meet at Nose Hill, very close to my house and if worse came to worse I could walk there. Or there is the off leash area at Nose Creek where we walk to everyday.

Yeah, that sounds great!! I'm not familiar with the nose creek off leash area, you'll have to give me directions!! Does Mon. or Tues. after lunch work for you?? Or just play it by ear cuz of possible babies being born?? LOL

I heard that the Humane society has a really good off leash course, I was thinking about taking it in the fall, if you want to join us. I'm not sure how much or whatever, but I will find out!!! It teaches recall techniques and such. Wish some of the idiots at the off leash park I go to would take that course

We call Canadian Tire "Church", since we usually go there on Sundays!!! LOL

Jane, I'm soo excited for you and Lindy!!! YAY!!!!

We told you it would work out, it just takes time (easier said then done, I know).

Good Job to both of you!!!!!

Luba, hahhahahahah that's what my dogs do here (they are males. I'm doing a fundraiser and I was told that with some of the money that I raise I can use it to get my Petie neutered and help other dogs in need).

I'm going to be posting what I'm fundraising for on here as soon as I get everything together.

Again, Jane and Lindy EXCELLENT JOB AND GREAT START!!!!!
