What food should I feed my kittens
I have 2 kittens, and am wondering what food I should serve them; Option 1 has the following nutrients: protein 35%, fat 21%, fiber 3%, moisture 10%. The main ingredients are:Chicken meal, ground rice, corn gluten meal. Option 2 has 40% protein, 18% fat, 2.5% fiber, 12% fiber. The main ingredients are chicken, corn gluten meal, soybean meal. Both seem to me to be about the same nutritionwise, but I would like some advice.
Thanks to all who will reply. My kittens are;Tonali, female, 16 months old; small for her age; 7lbs, very active. Elphin, male 6 months old, large for his age; 9 1/4 pounds of lean muscular kitten ( his father and male siblings are large, muscular and lean) Any advice would help. Sandyrivers

I wouldn't feed either
You really want more than 1 actual meat protein in the first 6 ingredients, the chicken or chicken meal is good but not enough as the only protein. Ground rice, corn gluten meal and soybean meal are filler ingredients cats really don't need in their diets.I can also tell from the moisture content that these are dryfoods, it is far far healthier for your kittens to be fed canned food. Mona B has given you some good suggestions for high quality canned foods, I would also add Nature's Variety, Eagle Pack Holistic Select, Evo by Innova Here are some links w/catfood info http://www.catinfo.org/ http://www.maxshouse.com/feline_nutrition.htm Why cats need canned food

Sandyrivers, any food where the ingredients start with ChickenMEAL is no good.
The food mentioned by Mona are all good, but cannot be found at the grocery-store or places like Wal-Mart,you have to go to a pet-food store, like PetValue,Pet-Smart,Global etc..my own 3 cats are fed Wellness no grain canned+a little Chicken-Soup-for-cat-lovers-soul....dry

Ground rice is only allowed in my littlest kittens dry food (Wellness Kitten Health). Otherwise my kitties only get grain free dry food.. I agree corn gluten is no good. I actually was watching something either on Food Network or Discovery Channel on how bread was made and they ended up doing a short segment on what corn and wheat gluten was, how it was made and what it looked like. I was like... so that's what is in the pet food? Now I get it.... Because it looked like play-doh and could be squished into little chunks and looked like meat, but it was not. It is also something very cheap to make.
So, listen to what everyone else is recommending Right now the dry foods I alternate between are:Taste of the Wild Blue Buffalo Wilderness Wellness Core and Before Grain... usually chicken flavor since my kitties love chicken. For wet food... I stray away from the pack and do use some odd brands like Weruva. Which is not made in the USA.... But has alot of unique flavors. I always have used Innova Evo canned chicken and turkey for Cats & Kittens and will continue to use it because it is a very good choice for my kitty family. Try going to google and searching for pet supply stores near your zip code.

Hi
We only have Walmart and grocery stores where I live and they don't sell any of that better food. Is there a way I can get it online? I live around Timmins Ontario. Thanks Debbie

Kitten food
Thanks to all those who reply, i will investigate the feeding suggestions you gave me and see where I can find them in my area. Sandy.
PS Brand 1 is 'Nutro' Natural Choice, (pink bag) kitten formula kibbles, I get it at the specialized pet store and costs about 22 bucks for a 4lb bag. Brand 2 is Purina One, (teal bag) kitten formula kibbles, they sell it at my local IGA and costs about 12 bucks for a 4lb bag; this is the brand my cats preffer.

I didn't see Nature's Variety, Instinct canned mentioned. It is a great food. They also make a prepared raw diet for cats too. If you want to see your kitties with the best muscle mass, then raw is the way to go.
