Identify this snake if you can *Please!*

Someone has set a snake loose in my area, may be venomous. I have mentioned before how it's all woods behind my house, about 6 acres and my friend Tara the vet tech owns it. The snake has NOT made it back near my house (I'm at the end of her property, she's at the front).

When she came over to check out my kittens to tell me if they are boys or girls (all boys!), she told me I am not allowed to cut threw the woods by her house... I have to either get a ride around or take the long way which involves going up to the main road and basically adding an extra half hour to a 5 minute trip.

From her myspace:

aprx 10 feet in length. Black with yellow chin. She brought the picture into work and the other people at the office said it looks really dangerous.

My cats should be fine though for the record, it's not been back this way and they aren't THAT stupid that they wouldn't hear/sense a snake sneaking up on them.

Anyone know what kind of snake this could be? How do we catch it or trap it? Animal control has been alerted. They are being lazy though and I don't think they know how to deal with this though.. cause this is new jersey we aren't supposed to have scary snakes!

Kathryn, does this look like your little villain, if so it is a common black rat snake, they are non-venemous, but i would keep small kitties safe until this guy is found.

Right away when she was describing it to me, I was like 'Oh just a ratsnake then?' but she really is fairly certain it's not.. and something much worse.

I've got the cats on a MUCH tighter 'leash'.. trust me. All ferals/strays are accounted for atleast 5-6 times a day, more if I've not got anything else to do that day. Buddy, Three Legged Missy and Tigger are checked on twice as often.. and Buddy comes in at night as well. Three Legged Missy is getting used to coming inside a little so once she learns the house is not a scary place, she will be kept inside at night as well.

I haven't gotten to see it in person. She says because of the yellow around it's chin.. and she said it's head was shaped funny.

She is a vet tech afterall. So I'm going to listen to her when she says this thing was scary.

well short of a baby anaconda, or a watermoccasin, the rat snake is the only one that totally fits that description. Where did the pictures comes from in the first place, do they know who released the snake. Oh and unless this is a vet clinic that deals with exotic animals, they wouldn't know anymore than we would. You might want to contact a snakeshop or zoo to ask them.

Looks like a ratsnake to me. Snakes scare a lot of people. Especially large ones. Be happy you have the rat snake around, excellent vermin control.

My friend Tristan aka her son took them on his cell phone. They were taken threw Tara's window.. so it's not like some random person took them... her son took them by her request.

It does look like a rat snake I see.. but it still looks really scary. I have a snake myself and this snake just is freaky looking.

If I come upon it, what the hell am I supposed to do? Run? Call the cops?!

She heard about someone had some snakes he wasn't supposed to have around here, and he let them loose after being evicted from his apartment. Sounds like a legit story. Dunno if it was on the news or what.

i didn't mean some random person took the pictures, i meant were they taken by the person who let them loose. As far as i know there has been nothing on the news, and if it was dangerous you would think that they would say something.

I searched local news sites and nothing's coming up.

I just thought you meant maybe someone took them and gave them to Tara.. but nope Tara met the snake first hand and had the picture taken.

How do we get animal control to trap it and relocate it? Is there such thing as a humane snake trapper?

Looks like a black rat snake to me. They're great climbers and are arboreal (live primarily in trees except to hibernate). Harmless, but HUGE. Biggest snake in Canada. And my googling says they're common in New Jersey, all over the state. I've seen them in the wild and handled them...very docile creatures. They probably would eat a small cat though. They mainly eat rodents, squirrels, birds and eggs. Leave it alone, it'll move on. They hibernate in groups, underground, and unless you have a hibernaculum on your property, it's not going to stick around. Must be lost They look pretty freaky, but they're actually really nice snakes.

Yeah, with a snake that size around I would be moving my kitties to a safer place than outdoors. It may be harmless to us but to a tiny kitten who can't go too far too fast it would be deadly! JMO

oh, and the yellow under the chin wouldn't be unusual for a rat snake. The juveniles are actually brightly coloured with orangey-red marks and yellow...some adults retain the yellow under the face. I seriously don't think you have anything to worry about. It's not an anaconda, look how skinny the thing is!!! I'd be willing to bet $100 it's a rat snake.

Keep in mind, as much as I love snakes and think the rat snake is a particularly cool one, I'd my pants if I saw one in the bush outside my house too. Your vet tech friend was probably looking at the critter with a fairly freaked-out mindframe...it can skew your perception of things.

I wouldn't mind one in MY backyard, I just wouldn't want it sneaking up on me on the bush next to my front door when I stumble out with the dogs, poorly caffeinated, first thing in the morning. I would And THEN I would be overcome by the coolness.

Nothing. They're shy and harmless. Walk around it. It won't hurt you unless you try to grab it or are really rough with it, and even then it's doubtful that it would bite. It'll probably be gone tomorrow.
