Walking Dandruff - anyone have experience with this mite??

Just wondering if anyone as had this problem. Are they hard to get rid of? Should we treat all the areas as well? How about shampooing - should we do this as well as the treatment? And what did you use - what really worked? Advantage, Revolution? Any suggestions would be appreciated! (I've read everything I could on the net but wanted some REAL advice

I've never had to deal with this problem....thank dawg. I've heard that Ivermectin is a treatment that is effective. And, yes, you do have to remove the pet and completely fog the area. Good luck.

I haven't encounter them myself thankfully. According to this they supposed to be fairly easy to get rid of. Both Invermectin and Frontline Spray Rx have apparently been useful and they mention other flea control products working as well. There are a variety of sprays, dips and powders you can purchase - going to the vet for this is best to be sure of effacacy & dosages. Remember all these products are pesticides & can be harmful if over used or a puppy, kitten or baby comes in contact with them.

The environment does need to be treated as well, bedding, crates, wood floors should be throughly cleaned, also a good idea to steam clean & spray your carpeting. The mites can live upto 10 days off a host, btw they can affect rabbits, cats and people too.

Thankfully, we've never encountered them. I've never even heard of them before! sigh...something new to worry about, although we use so much Frontline for the ticks that I'm hoping we won't ever see them!

that you can quickly eradicate them completely, Boubou! How many animals will you have to treat?

Hazel - it's a litter of puppies we've placed in a foster home. One of them was adopted by a vet tech. last week and she was a bit worried because her pup had dandruff so she had the vet take a look and that's when they discovered this lovely little creature that I never knew existed! They're all being treated with Advantage Multi and apparently they don't have alot of mites, so it should be easy to control....

I was worried because I was reading all about it on the net and boy oh boy, there is a bit too much info on there - it can really freak you out! Especially since two of the pups are leaving for their new homes on Sunday, I wanted to make sure they were OK to go. The vet did say that after a treatment, the adults die within 2 days, so the next step is to retreat in a month to get the new ones and hopefully that should do it! I just wanted to know if anyone here has had an experience with this mite...
