kennel cough

Hi

Just registered. My sister has a dog with kennel cough and she is coming to visit on the week-end (without the dog). Is there any chance she could carry the bacteria and infect my dogs?

The vet can give dogs a shot for this and it's pretty cheap. It's pretty infections disease. For sure keep the dogs apart but if you're worried your sister might be carrying the bacteria (which there is a good chance she is not) go get the shot for your dog.

Unfortunately, the vaccination probably won't help much. There are as many varieties of KC as there are of the common cold and the vaccine only covers about 4 of the most common varieties...plus it takes a while for the dog to develop immunity.

As I recall, KC is carried in droplets coughed or sneezed by the affected dog. I'm not sure how long the organisms are viable once the droplets dry. I suppose if you want to be absolutely sure, you could have your sis change to clean clothes once she gets to your place. But that's probably overkill.

The good news is that most cases of KC are easily resolved on their own or with the help of antibiotics.

I notice that you say your 'dogs'. How many do you have? We've had as many as 6 passing KC around at one time. The snarking was really rather impressive. Specially first thing in the morning...

for a pleasant family visit and no resulting cases of KC!

ooops...and where are hazel's manners?

Welcome to the board, Captain Tom! When you're able, we'd love to see pics of your furbabies!
