Smile Hi from the Hammer!

Hello Fellow Animal Lovers!

I just stumbled upon this site and I like it already. Everybody seems nice and relaxed....which is a nice change after the last doggy site I was using. There were a lot of people on there who kept pushing RAW diets for dogs in a pretty aggressive way, and though I think it is great if you choose to feed your dog RAW, it is not great if you expect everybody else should too!

I am 24, live in Hamilton, and am just finishing school for social work and about to start job searching (VERY stressful )

My dog is Chase, and he is a 10-month old Black Lab X German Shepherd X Border Collie Mix.He's an absolute sweetheart and a very good boy!

Anyway, I'm looking forward to meeting fellow dog owners and learning all I can from others on here!

Welcome to the board, Chase Mom!

Chase sounds like he could be high-energy and smart as a whip--a combination destined to keep you entertained and on your toes at all times! Sounds cute as a button, too--can't wait to see pics!

Right now he gets Nutro Natural Choice - Lamb & Rice - Large Breed Puppy....but after discovering Dogfoodanalysis.com I'm not happy with it! I'm planning on switching to Wellness on his next bag (the price scares me a bit, but the feeding guidelines show he'll need a lot less food, so I think it will be fine).

And yay for unique names! I've never met another "Chase" until now - I'll have to check out some pics of him

Yeah, Chase is a different name that you don't hear too much. When we were trying to come up with names "Chase" was on our short list with a few others. I was looking up "name meanings" and it said "Chase is of French origin and means "hunter" so I thought "hey perfect since a lab is a hunting dog".

Glad to hear you're switching from Nutro. Yes, Wellness and the other premium/holistic brands are more expensive but not only do you feed a bit less, your dog is also healthier so less trips to the vet. I would also suggest a grain-free kibble. Wellness has a grain-free formula called Wellness CORE. There are others, in case Chase doesn't like it or do well on it....check out the food forum here for lots of good information.

Also, when you first switch to a premium/holistic food he may have some loose poop. This is normal as his body is adjusting to a better quality food.....it's called the detox period. It helps if you do the switch slowly over a period of 10 days. You can also add a bit of plain organic yogurt to his meals....the kind that just has milk ingredients and active cultures as ingredients.

If you have any questions, start a thread in the food forum, as more members will see it there and be able to provide answers.

Have you looked into Canidae ? I think it's a bit cheaper and it's a pretty good food

Thanks for the tips - esp. about the detox and use of plain yogurt

I was looking at Wellness Core as well, so I'm just doing some research now about feeding grain free. I really have to say I'm impressed with their ingredients and the all-natural aspects of the food! I'll post in the food forum when I make the switch if I encounter problems.

Will post pics of Chase once administrator says I am allowed....not sure when that will be but I'll get some up eventually

They lift the posting attachments restriction after 2 days. It's there to stop the porn pics that the trolls like to post. You can send a pm to Marko and he will lift it sooner though.

Hmmm....the All Life Stages one gets 5 of 6 stars on dogfoodanalysis, so I'm pretty impressed. I think I thought that was only a brand available in the states so I never looked for it. I will keep it in mind for sure. I'm going to try Wellness first, but heard it has a funny texture some dogs don't like, so I will try a small bag and if it's a no-go then I'll give Canidae a shot.

Thanks everyone, and for all the dog food discussion in this thread. I think I've indroduced myself now, so I'll move my future food queries to the food forum!

Glad to meet everyone!

If you do decide to go with a grain-free kibble take a look at Orijen (www.championpetfoods.com). It is Canadian and also cheaper than Wellness CORE.

My concern about Canidae is I don't see glucosamine or chondroiten listed, and I think it's important esp. with a large breed dog....but don't want to pay for an extra supplement.

I thought Orijen was the most expensive food out there! Good to know

Decisions, decisions...

I have a lot of forum posts and research to read through now....I think I'm more confused than ever! Stupid blissful ignorance was much, much easier! Now I feel like anything short of going out and hunting a deer myself won't be good enough for my baby!

The amount of glucosamine and chondroitin in ANY brand of kibble is not enough to be of any benefit. And the amount that is in there has little value due to the processing of the kibble so you still have to supplement. You don't have to purchase the vet $$$ brands.....buy the human ones when they are on sale.
