No dogs allowed: Humane Society

Canadian Press

Friday, February 27, 2004

The Winnipeg Humane Society has closed its doors to new dogs until next week as it tries to clear up an outbreak of a parasite that causes intestinal illness.

Society spokeswoman Vicki Burns says almost every dog at the shelter has giardiasis, a treatable affliction that causes diarrhea.

She says the parasite has spread because the kennels are sprayed down and dogs in the close quarters pick up the parasite by walking through or licking the water.

The society hopes to control the outbreak by preventing any new dogs from coming into the shelter for the next few days while disinfecting takes place and dogs in the facility are treated.

The society will begin accepting new dogs again March 3.
