Question Clipping claw hints please

Pugsley has dark claws.

I clip them, but slowly - going back just a tiny bit at a time.
He's good about it, but gets restless because it takes me so long to do.

I cut too far today, into the quick He jumped a bit, didn't cry or anything, but you could tell it HURT.

Is there any sure-fire way to tell where the quick is, aside from taking multiple small cuts and hoping for the best ?

All my cats have had clearish claws, it was (and is - with Butterscotch) easy to clip theirs.

I look from the bottom of the claw, you can see where the flesh meets the nail. On my dog I can cut about 1.5mm of the flesh part off without going into the quick. If you figure out how far up the flesh part you can go, then just remember that and go from the bottom.

Thank you.

I'm so used to looking from the side of the claw with the cat(s), I never even thought about the bottom.
