Broken toenail
Hi there, has anyone else had their dog break a toenail right at the base close to the skin? Our Peaches, who has passed on now, broke her toenail almost off and it actually fell off a few days later and we noticed a new one growing, but now my little Jack Russell Jerry has broken her toenail close to the skin. It is not bleeding anymore and I know that we need to watch the skin around it and take her to the vet if she limps for more than a few day. Just wondered if anyone has some info. Thanks

Welcome to pets.ca, your "All over the USA" made me curious, do you live and travel in a motorhome?
Sasha had one dew claw left ans she caught it and broke at the base, the Vet said that the shell can grow back like our nails however, since this was her dew claw it was a little different he had to take the whols thing off as when he pulled the shell Sasha had bone showing, she healed well with no side effects. As you said just keep an eye on it so you can catch it if it gets infected, if you can get some of that sticky gauze bandage and put polysporin on it for a day that might help too.

We've had a couple of broken nails. It always gives me the willies--usually the husk will be hanging off and I'm such a wuss that I take them to the vet to have it removed. It seemingly bothers me more than it does the dog, who is typically trying to play again within minutes if I'd let them!
At any rate, we also get the same advice pbpatti gave: Just watch it for infection or that persistent limp. Chances are the nail will grow back or at least heal up quickly with no problems!

We had a dog who broke her nail and toe, we rushed her to the vet where we had to pay for sedation and x-rays just to find out it's no different then a humans toe, there is nothing that can be done.
So as the others suggested, just make sure the area is kept clean to prevent infection.

Broken toenail
Thanks, I am keeping an eye on it closely. I wish we were in a motorhome, actually my husband drives a semi-truck hauling mainly oversize loads and I go with him all the time, with our two dogs. It's quite a different life, I must say.
We don't know yet what part of the country we want to settle down in, but the Pacific Northwest seems to be the nicest so far, where my husband's family lives, except for the rainy days of course! |
