I have 3 degus and they got into a fight yesterday. Before I could seperate them one of them got his front right leg broken. We took him to the vet and they gave him antibiotics and pain medication. He's in a 10 gallon aquarium by himslef right now. Does anyone have previous experience with rodent' broken legs? ANy help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

http://www.petinfopackets.com/degus/deguinfopacket.html Basically both of these sites seem to say the same thing. Keep the degu quiet while the leg heals and by him/herself. You are doing those things so it's all good. Cute little beggars though. |

There aren't really a lot of vets around this area, and none of them specialize in pocket pets.
They are cute, so cute I can't be mad at the one that's responsible for his broken leg. Thanks for the links, I hadn't found a whole lot of sites with exclusive degu info.

You are welcome both Sarah and un4given. They are cute little things and pretty intelligent from what I have heard. Not sure I want any. I have a big enough zoo. But they are interesting to watch.
It was interesting to read that the leg could rot off if casted. I had wondered about that because when one of my kittens has a broken leg at 3 weeks the vet didn't cast it either. That was because the bones were so tiny and flexible. I am assuming that is true of the degu as well. She healed well and I am sure your little one will too. Good Luck and post some pics please! Would love to see them in action.

When I can find my camera I'll post some pictures.
He's doing good but his medication is bitter so he fights when its time to give it to him

Better lonely than getting hurt worse.
Such a cutie (Frenchy, don't look ) Are you getting a mate for him? Or an even number? Will that help the fighting issues? I read about the couple with the 3 pair so thought maybe they do better in pairs. How is the leg coming along? |

He should be healed in a month or so. After he's better we will try to move him back in with Bamboo (the 'alpha male' of the group) but Lollipop (the troublemaker) will probably stay by himself. But his cage is beside my rat's cage so he can look at them

What a little sweety,I hope it does not take a whole month for him to recover, but it looks like he has a nice retreat where he is.

Cookie has been more active, re-arranging his tank and flipping his igloo over. He stops taking one of his 2 meds in 2 days
Hes so hard to get to take his meds.
