Question about satin balls

I have to make some for Sam. I usually put rice in them but I've read grains are on the no no list for dogs with cancer. So I will skip on the rice. But about the ground beef , I usually cook it , should I ? Or would it be better to leave it raw ?

I will also put cottage cheese , raw eggs and canned pumpkin.

hmm.... you could try this-

ground chicken (is there such thing??? as opposed to red meat which is on the people's no no list for cancer and turkey which upsets some dogs tummies... unless turkey doesnt upset HIS tummy???) and the cottage cheese, eggs and a touch of pumpkin and bake them on low until brown on the outside. that should help hold them together like the grainey things would do. other wise feed the combo raw, slightly warmed up and call them satin patties??? i dont think he would be broken hearted if they werent round.

Frenchy, do not use pumpkin .....it's one of the veggies on the list to avoid along with potatoes, carrots, green peas, yams/sweet potatoes and corn.

I just realised something , no dairy products either , so that means no cottage cheese

I'll make my regular satin balls and just give them to Nelly.

If you have a food processor, you can make ground chicken in that; or an old-fashioned hand-crank meat grinder even better! They do sell them again now I've seen. The good thing about them is that you get different stages of fine-ness in the grind, not all fine and mushy like the food processor.

I did make the satin balls but Sam can't eat them because of the ingredients so Nelly is going to get them. I did bake salmon treats for Sam instead.

I'm gonna take a look at one of the links you mention when I have a day off but...how about keeping it simple for now like ground chicken, liver and giblets, and whole eggs? The eggs will help it stay all together. You can use turkey or beef as well, whatever you choose. For beef, it's much cheaper to buy large cuts, slice it up, and grind it yourself. It's at least 1/2 the price of already ground beef. I have an old hand grinder I could lend you or I can just grind it all up at work for you (much faster). You can add the veggies, any supplements, and herbs when you're ready to feed. It's really quite simple, just an hour or two of preparation and you're set for a month.

The salmon treats are excellent for Sam as he needs the extra Omega 3's that the salmon provides.

Frenchy, have you checked out any of the groups at Yahoo? You will probably find lots of good tips and recipes there from people that have gone through this.

If you want to check them out here is the website that provides the links to the various groups.....
