D Day 1944 June 6th

D-Day 60th Anniversary

The tranquil beaches of the Norman coastline made history on the morning of 6 June 1944. Chosen to be the theatre of the Allied landing that the Germans were expecting to take place in Pas-de-Calais, these beaches have carried the code names given to them by the allied command ever since: Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno, and Sword.

By the end of July more than 2 million Allied troops and 250,000 vehicles had landed in France. The Battle of Normandy, which began on these beaches, ended on the 21st of August with the encircling of the 7th German infantry. It cost the lives of over 29,000 American soldiers, more than 36,000 English and Canadians, 200,000 German soldiers, and 14,000 Norman civilians.

The battle proved to be the catalyst for a new order in a Europe, free from Nazi occupation. Let us not forget those who died and the sacrifices they made - but let us not forget the brave men who survived and helped to create the free world we live in. These servicemen put their lives on the line for others – they remember the battle as a very important part of their lives– they saw their friends die – they remember the good times and the bad times - they feel lucky to have survived – they are immensely proud to have served their country.

Keep Moving

Keep Moving

Keep moving lads…….keep moving
Don’t huddle……. on this beach
Don’t make yourselves a target
For those guns up there to reach
Keep moving lads…….keep moving
There’s the seawall….over there
Keep moving lads…keep moving
Don’t falter…or despair
Don’t look…..at comrades falling
Around you…..everywhere
Keep moving lads…keep moving
We can take this…on the chin
Keep moving…..and keep praying
Before those guns…they zero in.

This Beach

This beach…could tell a story
This beach…it would not lie
Could we…..but only listen
This beach….would make us cry

A Quiet Place

It’s quiet here, so quiet
Standing on this hill
But if I stand here too much longer
My eyes with tears will fill
Looking down…….I’m there again
On that beach……just down below
Far different…to that morning
That I remember so
That beach…..it was a hell on earth
Where no man…. should ever go
I remember
I was down there
I should know
Don’t cry now…dear old soldier
That was many years ago

The Coxswain

There are forty of us waiting
In this little LCA
We sailors…and these soldiers
We’re taking in today
They came aboard our mother ship
Now several days ago
They’re growing very pale
As the strain begins to show
They’re only boys…the most of them
Eighteen to twenty three
For some of them…..tomorrow
Is a day……they’ll never see.
I can’t promise we’ll all make it lads
But I’ll do my best…you’ll see
I’ll remember you….you young soldiers
This day….in Normandy
God bless you lads….and keep you safe
We’ll meet again….one day
This is it then lads…..keep your heads down
AWAY ALL BOATS………AWAY

Thank you Luba. My father was in Europe at that time, with the Highlander Regiment out of Halifax. I have no information about where he served, or anything else about his wartime life.

Any place I can look on the net to find such information?

I'm lousy at doing searches, and each one was a dead end.

Unfortunately I learn all about this in my adult life, though it should have been part of school curriculum. Shameful that it isn't. Perhaps now it is different, I hope so!

I would love to see that picture Anita, email it to me if you still have it around

LR if you send an email to the RCL with your dads information they will assist in locating his service records!

Thank you Luba!! I'll do that.

Do you have a special interest in this subject? Are you looking for pics? I have many pics of my father looking very handsome in his uniform. Unfortunately, his war experiences left him with post traumatic stress (or "shell-shocked") as it was called then.

Many of my relatives and family are veterans.

I would love love love to see the pictures

I remember trying to replace some of my dads medals and having to fill out a form etc.. with dads authorization and the legion was very helpful. I'm sure you will enjoy dealing with them. Very nice people.

They have a great magazine that I subscribe to as well, cheap and very very much worth it. You can read about that on their site as well.

I was a person of uniform as a youngster in the Cadets for a period of time(lol) then as an adult for 7yrs in municipal law enforcement. Nothing like what these men and women had to deal with but my respect and admiration is so very high of them. I can't appreciate them enough, and more should be done to support them. I know so many veterans living in poverty situations, it's not very nice at all.

Now, what about your handsome daddy and the pics.

Thumbs up

I have to say, ladies, that my opinion of the people on this board just went a lot higher - and it was pretty high already! It's nice to hear patriotism. My husband is a Vietnam vet and I get really steamed when people don't support the men who are fighting to provide the freedoms they enjoy. You're a nice group of people!

It's a disgrace! There is a Veterans' hospital here, with a few veterns left in it. The government is going to close it and make the old soldiers move, much against their will. How many veterans are left living anyway? You would think they could be given some comfort in their last years.
My own father died many many years ago, and it pains me to think he would have been treated this way.

glasslass - I remember very well the reception the Vietnam vets got when they returned, and most of them just boys who were only doing what they had been told was their duty. Very sad indeed.

Unfortunately, I hear some of the same comments now when conversations are about Iraq. I work in a college library. It's amazing how thoughtful today's young people can be and then there are those who are just thinking about the next tattoo or party.

Glasslass it is usually a friendly board and thank you for joining it's nice to have you!

Vietnam, like the soldiers had a choice of where to go and what to do. It's shameful, if people don't believe in specific political wars then protest the ones who have the control, not the soldiers drafted to fight for their country.

LR thats a sad sad situation about that hospital. There are ALWAYS going to be veterans. This may be a place where many WW II vets are but what about Korean Vets or Vietnam vets.

These men and women have a common thread among them, and would feel so good to be respected the way they deserve to be.

I'll tell yu something comical however....The Legions are the only places people can smoke in now, and they're beginning to see a lot of traffic. For those that want to shoot a game of pool/darts, have a beer and their smoke.

All our bars, clubs, casino's are smoke free (thank goodness) BUT I am very happy they left the Legions alone!

Luba, I emailed the Legion but they dont' have that information. They told me to look in the Canadian Archives, where there is a form to fill out for requesting info.

However, THEY decide if it's important enough for them to bother looking it up, so here's hoping!
