A trip to Troll Falls

Very breezy and unpleasant in the mountains yesterday!!!

But Abby and Keeper managed to get out and do a few things, like seeing what Troll Falls looks like in the winter. Below, Abby approaches . . . . amazingling, there's a running stream in a cavity in this block of ice.

Below, Keeper was there too!!!

While Troll Falls is surrounded by forest and canyon and a pleasant diversion, the same couldn't be said for Wasootch Creek, below, where Keeper wonders what the heck we're doing out in a wind tunnel. Very good question!!! We walked up the creek aways.

That's Nakiska in the background, home of the alpine events for the 88 Winter Olympics, with Keeper and Abby sniffing in the foreground at Wasootch. It takes about 2.5 hours to walk from the base of the ski hill up to the summit. The walk is called Centennial Trail and is part of a 19 kilometre trail that crosses three mountain peaks and eventually comes down on Pigeon Mountain near the Trans Canada highway.

Saturday morning, just before sunrise, with a soft glow starting to hit the Rockies, some elk transit the field in front of our house, heading for better cover for the day.

Below, previous weekend, a strange place to be mining for horse poop but that's what Abby was doing while walking up Prairie Creek trail in K-Country.

That elk picture would make a wonderful postcard.

How cold does it have to be for a waterfall to freeze like that?

Wonder who called them Troll Falls ... trolls being mythical, mean but stupid creatures of Nordic origin.

Beautiful pics of the frozen falls though. I've seen equivalents in Norway and in the French and Swiss Alps, it's always spectacular!

Thanks . . . .

Have some more . . . .

Walking down the west side of Chain Lakes, south of Longview, Alberta, is one of our favourite diversions, winter or summer. We walked about an hour and a half in this landscape and as we were getting set to turnaround, I saw a dot in the middle of the lake, about three-quarters of a mile ahead. I put a long lense on it and still had to blow the images up to grainy obscurity. But it looks to be a wolf, larger and in other images, darker coloured with a whiter mane. This one was wiling away the day, looking this way and that . . . we're quite familiar with coyotes and this appeared to be something else.

Below, Keeper at our turnaround spot, looking south, directly at the alleged wolf, appears not to notice it.

The walk, the alleged wolf still a half hour ahead . . . . . we've never seen any other person walking here in all the years we've been coming. Only a few fishermen hanging out near the dam where we start.

Lots of time for Abby to do some rollovers to cool down.

I've never seen a picture like those falls. That's beautiful. Abby and Keeper look like they're having a ball!

Heheh . . . . . well, if you're homesick I'll help you out a bit since my new satellite internet has introduced me to the wonders of youtube.

Check this Paul Brandt video out. Shot in southwestern Alberta. The picture of the Big Rock outside of Okotoks at about the 1:10 mark needs to move just a little to the right and then you could see my house in the distance. Okotoks is an aboriginal word for Big Rock. The head nod thing is pretty funny because its very true on the prairie.. . . . as well as the lifting of one or two fingers off the steering wheel on a gravel road if you're passing someone by that you know.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bhkcjxLCm8Y

This Terry Clark video was shot at Longview and in a field next to Mossleigh (google that place!!).

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tceLwHFpSd4

Both videos are along the foothills of the Rockies where Abby and Keeper routinely prowl and the picture below, just north of Longview, is the pumpjack where Clark is walking. I recognized the road she's on as we've stopped there a few times.

Also, from a few days ago, Abby (foreground) and Keeper on a forest romp. We went off the beaten path on the way up Forlan Ridge and were astonished to find other human footprints out in the middle of nowhere . . . I guess we weren't the only crazies . . . . . so we followed them for awhile . . . back to the normal path.

Anyhoo . . . . . I can't imagine living anywhere else. Well, we liked Tuscany but not enough.
