Renal Insufficiency/Hypothyroid

Hi there, My 13 yr old female spayed Belgian Terverun Sadie was just diagnosed with renal insufficiency I'm not completely familiar with the condition and have been reading up a bit online... The question I cannot seem to find anything on is this: previous to this diagnosis Sadie was daignosed with Hypothyroid back in Jan of 2006 - could this be related? as well could the treatment levothyroxine have caused this? I don't believe so however I have found a few confusing articles online which may link them.

I am not very familiar with HYPOthyroidism in dogs, but familiar with HYPERthyroidism in cats & now even more familiar with Chronic Renal Failure in cats {my cat was treated & cured for HYPERthyroidism 2 years ago & was recently diagnosed with CRF related to the toxic pet food but unrelated to her hyperthyroidism}.

In the CRF studies for cats there have been links between the treatment of HYPERthyroidism & kidney failure. They mention that kidney failure usually appears within 3 months of starting the HYPERthyroid treatment ~ any of the 3 available for cats, but most often the symptoms of kidney failure are masked by the thryoid issues & therefore go undetected until the treatment starts to stablilize the thyroid glands.

Having said that, the treatments/medications for HYPER are different than those for HYPOthyroidism, I suppose it is possible the two are related in your case, like I said the thyroid issues will mask kidney problems especially if you have just recently been able to properly regulate the thyroid glands. I am unfamiliar with the medication your dog is on so I won't comment on that directly.

Veterinary Partner - Hypothyroidism is a good article from a trusted website that most vet offices will refer patients to for finding information.
