Indoor Tropical Plant Identification Help?
Any ideas of what this is?? It was a gift from my niece a few years ago, the pot only said "4 inch tropical" I know the 4 inch just means the size of the original pot. When I moved it into the current 5.5" stonewear pot it wasn't overgrown with roots & doesn't seem to be crowded with this size. Right now the stalk is 8 inches tall from the base to the top where the new leaves continue to grow. The first pic was taken in April 2007 with lots of leaves (excuse the aloe plant in the front), the 2nd pic taken tonight shows new "arms" that have just started growing this past week - never had them before, the 3rd pic is a close up of the stalk - the lighter ridges are where leaves had grown died & were removed - kinda reminds me of a coconut tree but not hairy

This is a close up of the leaves on the top where all, until new branches, have grown from. Any ideas?

Yeah it kinda looks like that but the leaves only grow to a max 3.5-4" long, maybe a mini one? I'll look into that more Thanks Rainbow. I should also mention the leaves start out light bright green, darken to dark green, then a dark purplish-red.

I've been searching but there seems to be a wide varity of looks within the same plant name but they're all much bigger some of the pics sure look like it though The leaves don't seem to go purple until they're ready to die

Want4Rain Thanks for the help I would love to know what it is It was a gift & was bought from IKEA but they don't have the same plants there anymore & they never said what it was, just had "Tropical" on the pot.

EDIT to add new pictures I just took w/close ups of the leaves in the middle of the stalk

as per my "houseplant expert" book, it's a "draaena deremensis" and the "janet craig" is the green one

or dracana frangrans

doesn't say the common name

hmmm looks similiar too though it's @ least 6 years old & only 8 inches tall right now & the stalk is really skinny - I'll check more throughly on this thanks Jiorji

btw the other plant in the first pic, the really light green one is Aloe

does it say what happens if you keep it in a 5.5 inch pot? will it still grow to 4 feet? The diametre of the stalk is 1/4 inch

that pot you got there is more than enough for it. I think that you can stomp the growth but if it's growing so slowly, why bother? it won't reach that heigh for another few years

The very first pic, the bottom of that picture right in the middle infront of mystery tropical is my aloe. I thought that's what you meant by:

yep, mom said it sounded like a corn plant but she doesnt have internet at the house so couldnt look at it. i dont know what the other one is. she named some species of bird with a moppy head and then laughed.... maybe one of you will find that funny.

also, there are several different types of 'corn plant' some grow quickly and very large, others grow very slowly.
