Exclamation Very ill Dog may have eaten Skunk feces

Hello There!
I'm new to this forum but it seems to have the best questions and answers out there, so I hope you can help me.

We have a very old pure-bred brittney spaniel that my boyfriend rescued from the SPCA for his elderly mom a few years ago. We had to put his mom in a home last year so we've now inherited Ginger. She's an old girl (we have no idea how old) that was likely a puppy-mill dog with several old dog issues, but we love her just the same.

The day before yesterday, Ginger took a huge (long solid log) poop on the bathroom floor (which she NEVER does unless she's absolutely desperate) and peed there too.

Yesterday and today she looks like she has the flu - too weak to walk anywhere, eat or drink anything. She took sips of water and still pees so something is going through her.

Our neighbor says he saw a skunk in the bushes where Ginger explores and does her 'business' all the time and, on the day where everything seemed to start, my boyfriend saw her emerge eating something, which we now think might have been skunk feces, rather than her own. (Why do dogs eat their own poop like that?)

Would this be making her so ill? Would it persist two days later? We'll be taking her to the vet this evening, but just thought I'd see if it's there's something we could do for her in the meantime or if there is a serious danger.

Thanks in advance for all your help!

Welcome to the forum and kudos to you for taking in your mother-in-law's dog . She must be very fond of you for taking on the responsibility of welcoming Ginger into your home.

I would suggest you take in a fresh stool sample to the vet this evening to check for intestinal parasites just in case your dog did, in fact, digest skunk feces.

Her recent change in behavior may not be related to whatever she may or may not have eaten and rather be symptoms of her aging. Here you'll find an interview with Dr. Lee (Senility & Dementia) that you may find quite informative if your vet can not determine anything wrong with Ginger: http://www.pets.ca/blog/

Good luck and please keep us updated.

I would guess, because of the short time frame between the eating of the unknown-but-may-be-skunk-poop substance and the "big poop" event, that the accident in the bathroom may be something distinct from her current ails and just happened coincidentally around the same time. If it was that big a poop, it may have taken her by surprise and she, given her age, wasn't able to get to you/ outdoors in time. As for the possible skunk poop ingestion, I imagine your Vet is likely to give you an all purpose medicine for parasites, perhaps an antibiotic and ask you to provide a fecal sample in a week. Let us know how you make out!

Ginger didn't make it

It is with a very heavy heart that I tell you that we had to have Ginger put down. It was too painful to watch her suffer and the vet said that given her age, it was the best thing to do.

She lived a good life and we will miss her very much.

Thank you all for your kind advice and wishes.
If any of you have birds, I might see you on one of those forums.
All the best.

I'm so sorry. She was lucky your boyfriend picked her over all the others and lucky again when you took her in last year. Sorry you didn't have longer.
