Could you help me Identify my dog?

I adopted 2 dogs within 4 month of each other as puppies. My girlfriend and I have had them for about a year, but we were curious about what breed our dogs may be.

I will give you guys dog #1 first. His name is Utley and we adopted him at 8 weeks from the miami animal shelter. He is about 14 month old. He weighs around 55 lbs and he is very friendly. Ha has almost a completely black tongue, and huge teeth. His tail also curls straight up.

Thanks for your help. The vet thought he was pit mix at 4 months, but what else is there?

The red dog, some sort of retriever is next. I will post more pics of him later.

Hi they are cuties. The only breeds that I know of that have black, blue or purple tongues are Chows and Shar Pei's. Chows tails also curl up as do Shar Pei's. And your cute red one looks a bit like a Nova Scotia Duck Trolling dog. Well that is my thoughts on them check them out and see what you think Your hair color looks almost the same as the dogs

He sure does . Maybe part vampire ? Sorry, I couldn't help it. I wouldn't be able to help you other than to say they're both definitely pure bred cute. I'm still trying to figure out exactly what one of mine is too Perhaps when more members come on line, they'll be able to give you more ideas.

Congrats by the way for giving them another chance .

They are cuties, all right! And you all look as if you enjoy each other's company. The perfect win-win situation.

Utley's tongue looks kind of red to me but you sure can see the pittie in him! The coat and build doesn't look like a Chow match to me and the ears are off for a Sharpei... hmmmm.

I agree with Mastifflover on the Duck Toller guess for the red one.

Sweeties whatever they are ~ welcome to pets.ca !

The Tongue has a black spot on the tip, then red strip then it is black all the way down to the back of his throat, as far as you can see....

Utley looks just like my old pup, Morgan. She was 1/2 pitbull, 1/4 black lab and 1/4 doberman.
Both dogs are adorable

Utley.... my guesses would be lab mix? pittie mix? (as a puppy)

as the older pics... lab? pittie? basenji? those ears and the fact that the tail curls up sounds an aweful like my own dog (except mine isn't all black) I have a basenji mix - with ears just like Utley's, a tail that curls up, or lays flat down, and he's 55lbs. we were told he was also a basenji & pit-mix from the shelter we got him from. (we are certain of his basenji half)

interestingly enough, this was recently posted on this forum about black tongues... which may help shed some light. apparently many breeds have black (or spotted) tongues.

The Great Tongue Debate

There is a myth that chows are the only breeds with black tongues, and that if the tongue has black spots it must have chow heritage. This is not true.

Everyone in chows knows the standard comment--if the dog has a black tongue, then it is a chow. We also hear the comment that if it has pink spots, then it is a mix. If only it were this simple!

Black spots on the tongue in no way indicate whether the dog is a chow or a chow mix unless that tongue is attached to a dog that looks like a chow. There are many, many breeds that can have black pigment on the tongue. Some can have large spots of black pigment, and sometimes they may have almost solid black pigmentation on their tongues. So, if a black pigmented tongue is attached to a dog that does not look like a chow, then it is probably not a chow.

Also true is that not all purebred chows will have solid pigment on their tongues. Even the best of show breedings can produce chows with incomplete pigment, so we certainly should not discount a rescued chow with a spot or two of pink. The following is a list of breeds known to have purebred individuals appear with black pigmentation on their tongues.

The list compiled by Vicki DeGruy of the Chow Club Welfare Committee.
Shar-Pei
Labrador Retriever
Golden Retriever
Cocker Spaniel
Siberian Husky
Rottweiler
Rhodesian Ridgeback
Newfoundland
Collie
German Shepherd
Akita
Belgian Sheepdog
Tervuren
Malinois
Fila Brasileiro
Cairn Terrier
Great Pyrenees
Keeshond
Airedale
Doberman Pinscher
Bouvier de Flandres
Australian Shepherd
Australian Cattle Dog
Pug
Shiba Inu
Dalmatian
Flat-coated Retriever
Gordon Setters

Hello -

I definitely agree the red one looks like many friends I know who have Nova Scotia Duck Trolling dogs. They are very intelligent and friendly to kids and other dogs.

Your black one appears to be a black lab and pitt cross. Given his ears I would also think he may have some doberman in one of his parents. Again these breeds are highly intelligent and are very active.

Enjoy them.

Laura
