My lone crow

With the sad news of Tracker still on my mind,I was elated this morning to see my"pet-Crow"is no more alone,he was happily munching my yesterdays left-overs together with his"girlfriend".I know what you are thinking but Oakville has no more crows because of West Nile and I happen to think they are very important in the "nature of things".....

You have a pet crow? I wish I could send you the big flock that insists on screaming as loud as they can near my window at 6:00a.m.

Well,we were very hard hit by West Nile only the odd crow left and no,he's not a pet-crow,but I've been feeding him for a couple of years,he's got a bum leg.I used to have seven, all dead except him
Luba, send them over here, lot's of food and good stuff!!
Other than that,I actually had an awful morning, found a dead Calico-cat on the side of my road,a dead pregnant squirrel and a little baby black-bird still alive.Humane society picked up the cat and also took the squirrel, but would not take the baby-bird,so he'll die
I had to go and tell the owners of the cat that she was killed on the road...
and now it's raining

Yes Luba, with the killing of the Cormorants, the dead beautiful Calico-cat,the very pregnant dead squirrel and the teeny, weeny baby-bird it's been kind of a brutal day

I love crows! Ten years ago I raised a nest of three that were abandoned by their parent's.I named them Edgar, Allen & Poe. I was able to rehabilitate all three and release them and they stuck around for a long time., they were the clowns of the neighborhood, but do not leave a tool box open....or anything laying around...the stuff they brought home was amazing!

There are no three birds other than crows that I could think more deserving of the names Edgar, Allan and Poe... That's awesome. Dark too!

Nevermore, sadly. All earn their names and have a way of voicing them.

Little thieves! I miss them.

Did you ever think of taking any pics of them? We never did and I so wish we had (had him poop trained to go on neighbours car lol ) that was funny.
He actually used to fly above us when we'd walk to school , then come back and meet us after (not kidding) funny bird he was..then one day ahhh the call of the wild.
For awhile after he'd come visit now and then until he got a girlfriend, see isn't that always the way?

A friend of mine told me a story about a documentary he saw on TV. Some guy was doing an experiment with crows. He put one in a cage with a bottle, which had a piece of food placed in it, and a long thin bendable piece of metal. The crow appeared to examine the bottle, then the piece of metal. It then took the metal in it's beak and bent the end of it. Used the new tool to get the food out of the bottle.
At first I was thinking "how cute". But after a while and some thought it became readily apparent that there was much more to think about.
The bird displayed an understanding of the manipulation of tools that serve a purpose. That's pretty impressive since it took humans quite a while, and we were given opposing digits to work with from the beginning! It also displayed an understanding of the physical properties of items (i.e. the malleable (spelling) qualities of metals). It also displayed an understanding of spacial limitations in that it fashioned a thin tool with a hook that could claim the prize from the bottle!
Very impressive. Now why don't they listen to me when I tell them not to crap on my car. Damn birds.

on another note in general i'm concerned about avain flu and other pandemics in canada and the rest of the world. I did see some information on www.pandemic.ca

Billy-Bob,I actually saw that documentary too and it was amazing..
Karin,I used to chase away the crows from my birds-nests,but soon realized the futility of it all and later discovered what amazing birds they really are.
Watching them interact with each other was very entertaining,I say was, because they are gone all except the two I now have and hopefully they'll survive the summers West Nile crisis and have a baby or two
They are certainly the best fed crows, they get anything from leftover steak to pizza,no leftovers ever goes in the garbage at my house and my husband always finishes his plate so "the crows won't get it"
