spray bottle of water

does this actually work as a means to get a dog to stop barking?

I am not sure if the water would work? besides dogs are funny..he may end up having a fear of the water bottle?? I would try a growl..in a firm voice...or a ahh! ahh! type command...if this doesnt work you could try a small lead attached to the collar...using a calm voice correct him...then if he does not stop a small tug type correction on the lead...the trouble I found with leaving a lead on my boy was he always thought he could play with it..so ahh! ahh! seems to work..

Have you tried any of the obediance classes? I found them great!

No, I have not found water bottles work to control barking or instill quiet. And I absolutely agree with Winston, I think obedience classes in your case would be a great thing.

i looked into the local ones at petco and the people teaching them dont seem legit. more like long time employees trying to make some bucks.

i read something about a spray bottle...was it lemon juice or something?

somebody has to know what im talking about.

and just FYI, he knows all the commands i want him to know, im doing NILIF training with him now so i don't think the formal class is as important.

and yes i do still use the choke collar on walks, he's a puller

1 - there are much better training options than Petco. for example: http://www.tenderfoottraining.com/ (for home training) Edited to add: I just realized you were in MA (me too!) I HIGHLY recommend http://www.geminidogs.com/ as a training facility.

2 - lemon juice in a spray bottle? omg, no. what if you accidently hit the dog in the eye? OUCH! definitely NOT a wise idea.

3 - formal training is not only about the dog learning commands, it's to teach YOU how to communicate effectively with your dog. How to shape behaviors, how to curb behaviors (such as dealing w/ excessive barking), to create a bond & respect through positive means, for socializing, etc...

4 - there are other methods (and tools) available for dealing with a dog who pulls. from learning how to walk in a heel position, to harnesses that don't have the potential to do physical harm such as the choke collar.

Just to add to Jessi76's suggestions ~ a great alternative is the Newtrix collar.
