Spaying and neutering

Lately there is an influx on this board of irresponsible breeders of dogs and cats. Mixed breeds, unhealth tested and untitled purebreds, none of whom should ever be bred, either by intent, ignorance, neglect, greed or sefishness.

Right now on Petfinder (covering the U.S. and Canada) there are NINETY SEVEN THOUSAND homeless dogs listed, and SEVENTY ONE THOUSAND CATS.

These figures are misleading, as there are probably 10 or 20 times that number of cats who are feral, abandoned, homeless and unseen. Who will live short and brutal lives, struggling, suffering and finally dying, without ever knowing the most meager comfort, kindness or love.

Many people think THEY are not adding to this problem, because all of their puppies and kittens are wanted. No doubt many of the homeless animals on Petfinder ended up there through just this kind of reasoning. Where else do they all come from?

If you care anything at all about the slaughter that is going on, please don't contribute to it, and get your pets altered NOW.

Thanks LR, well put and very very well thought out!

An article on responsible pet ownership for both choosing cat/dog!

http://www.ovma.org/pets/pet_select.shtml

Edited to insert the following information:

I also found some information on places to get your cats and dogs spay/neutered at low costs or free of charge There are many more, contact your local Humane Society for one close to you if you are having financial difficulties and need your cat/dog altered.

http://snaptx.org/
The Spay-Neuter Assistance Program, Inc. (SNAP) provides free and low cost spaying, neutering, and veterinary care. We currently operate clinics in Houston, Los Angeles, Native American lands, San Antonio, and Monterrey, Mexico. We exist to end the destruction of healthy dogs and cats in animal shelters resulting from overpopulation.

On another pet site I visited they made it known that they did not welcome discussions of unethical breeding. They stated what they considered ethical breeding. Maybe if the moderaters made a statement like this just like the link they made on this forum recently to direct people when they had vet emergencies that would help, rather that arguing with all of the irresponsible people that show up here.

High Fives LR and Thank You, please post this every week so maybe it will sink in to any newbies that join..

I cannot stress enough how important it is to spay/neuter. There are way to many animals that need a home already and if you claim to love your animal, think about it's future...by spaying & neutering you can almost rule out the possibility of any hormonal type cancers..very common cancers.

It also makes a heathier, happier pet.

apart from the obvious accidents, i think alot of this stuff comes down to human egos, 'the look what i made' factor. well to all prospective pet owners, i get more of an ego trip from being a RESPONSIBLE pet owner, it makes one feel good and you can see the results of your effort in your well behaved, desexed dog..
what sort of person lets a dog get pregnant over and over again till her titties are infected and draging on the ground, its not pretty and heart breaking to see these animals used as breeding machines. so if you read this and you are not decided on desexing, well you know the ressponsible, kind, loving and RIGHT thing to do so get to it, your pet will thank you for caring about their health and well being.

I know Mel

I'm trying to place a 12 yr old golden right now that was used over the years by a BYB for many litters. Poor dear, they're dumping her now!
