A Halti is not a muzzle !!

why does people always think that the halti or gentle leader is a MUZZLE , it's not they make them for people who has problems with thier doggies pulling !! it is not mean, it is not crule, it does not hurt the doggie !! it helps when you are walking it helps when you are training why o why can't people understand this I am sooo tired of people stoping me and telling me I am crule to my dog !!

I'm not crule

I know I hear the same things when I walk with Hunter. They say "Oh is he aggressive, poor thing has to be muzzled"
Drives me crazy too

Yeah, I get it too with the newtrix. If it was a muzzle, his mouth wouldn't be open and ready for biting.

it happens to me all the time. I'll be out w/ Tucker and I hear "dont' go near that one, he's muzzled, must be mean" or "oooooh look at the muzzled dog" or "he's so well behaved, why do you muzzle him?"

I've even seen people RUN to grab their child and whisk them away if they get within 10 ft of Tucker while wearing his gentle leader.

granted Tucker plays it up and gives the person the evil eye (mostly because he's horribly embarassed by having to wear his purple head harness in public). but the look on his face doesn't necessarily help matters.

I say "no, it's for training and control. he's a nice dog"... insert Tucker's evil eye.... "sure lady...sure he's nice."

It's a kind of halti, but it tightens behind the head if he pulls...

It probably does... He doesn't have any marks from it or anything (there's fleece on the nose bit), but he rubs on us all the time (when we stop walking).... You can get it in the store on this site. Apparently it's cheaper here than where I got it.

Yeah, that's it. You can go to a store to try it on if you want to be sure to fit it right... Some stores let you try it out on the sidewalk before buying..

Most of the good dog food stores have them now... I know Woofers in DDO has them, and another store on Monkland... You'd just have to call around.

Oh, I totally know what you mean!!!! I use a gentle leader a lot and so many times little kids run up to pet Petey, only to halt in their tracks when they or their parents see "the muzzle." Two only ladies gave me the wide berth at the park today, I was so annoyed! I see more and more people using them, so that gives me hope that someday, people will realize they don't mean the dog is dangerous!

We get that too when we are walking our great dane. As soon as people see tha halti they think she is vicious. I get a chuckle because sometimes we will let my 2 and a half year old niece hold part of the leash and "walk" her (we are actually in control, but she thinks she is walking the dog). It's even funnier when they hear this little voice tell this so called vicious dog to sit and she does it right away. Then they notice my neice standing beside dog holding onto leash. It gives us a chance to explain what the halti is really for.

When I had gentle leaders on the dogs people constantly thought they were muzzles, but the best was when a guy went so far as to pull his SUV out of rush hour traffic on Notre-Dame so that he could inform me that I shouldn't be scared of my pit bulls, that they were great dogs and didn't need muzzles.

Now I could totally appreciate his sentiment, in fact I thought it was great that he cared so much that he went through that much trouble, but I tried explaining to him about 10 different ways that they weren't muzzles, I even went so far as to demonstrate that they could still open their mouths. The guy just couldn't get it though, he kept telling me not to muzzle them, so I decided he must be an idiot

This is the main reason i wont use one. Most people are afraid of Rosco as is. The last thing i want is them to assume he is because hes muzzled.

That's really cute, Pitgrrl. Not too bright, but well-meaning.

Angeldogs, it works really well for Boo, but not for all dogs. The second it gets slightly tighter, he backs off.

The gentle leader company used to sell pins that said "No! It is NOT a muzzle!" It used to say that in big letters on all their brochures too. I went to an outdoor event once, and there was a family with a vizsla on a GL, and there was a little girl walking in front of the dog saying "It's not a muzzle it's a gentle leader." to anyone who even looked in their direction.

When I first started using head halters, they were pretty new, and were getting really good reviews, but I couldn't get them to work for me. We had a bunch of GL's donated to the shelter, and I would try them, but the dogs would either flip out and eventually get them off, or would pull hard even with them on. It wasn't until years later that I learned they had to be fitted a certain way and I was doing it all wrong! The dogs accept them much more easily when they're fitted right, they can't get them off, and they actually work. I felt pretty stupid to have never read the fitting instructions.

We have a pit bull now that had ACL surgery, and during the recovery, she has to start out walking really slow. Well try telling her that! We had her on an easy-walk harness, but it chafed her poor little armpits! So I have fitted her with a GL, and she is accepting it well, but I'm so afraid people will think it's a muzzle, and think "vicious pit bull".

Hmm I am not a fan of them..but maybe I should get one for my 11 inch JRT (see avatar) she is dog reactive, and I have an issue with ppl coming up to us with their dogs. They assume cause she is little and cute that she is no threat to their dog, (also as we do a lot of dogsports she doesn't react until they are right in her space) and let their unmannered dog come right up to her. Maybe I should 'muzzle' her so ppl will stay away

I'm lucky....I live in a small community and mostly see the same people when we go for our walks. Once I told everyone about them (I use the Newtrix Easyway), they now understand.

I really try not to listen to them but it is hard not to when they are all around you !! It just gets me so mad, why don't they just mind their own busness, or not judge.

the people around here thought Nakita my huskey was a wolf also and asked how i could own such a violent dog
