Reaction to antibiotic shot
My cat caught a virus. She was sneezing, eyes were watering, and she acted like she had a sore throat. I took her to the Vet and he said that she also had a fever of 102 degrees. He gave her a shot of antibiotic and within 15 minutes she started forthing from her mouth and continued to excessively do so for about 6 hours. She definitely wound up sicker than when I took her to the Vet. I called him and he said that she must be having a reaction to the shot. She was so sick that I thought that I might lose her. She was better this morning, but she acted a little weird, especially with water. All she wanted to do was spill it. Has anybody else had a problem like this? Since she is somewhat better this morning and has drank a little bit of water is this something that I need to continue to worry about?

You are right you could have lost your cat. IMHO you should have brought her to the vet WHILE she was having a bad reaction.
Why did the vet not suggest you bring her in? Did the vet give you advice on what to do, what to look for? If the answers to this question are unsatisfactory...I would change vets immediately. Given that she seems better this morning she probably (hopefully - but who knows) will be better...but if this were my cat I would have brought her in while the bad reaction was happening and to tell you the truth I do not understand why you did not do the same. If this were my cat I would STILL bring her in today to make sure all is well... |

I agree the vet should have seen the cat while this 'reaction' was happening and you should still go in.
They need to chart and keep record (as do you at home) of any medication reactions...like with us and our physicians.

I did call the VET when she was reacting. He got rather beligerant and told me to "just bring her back in, I'll turn around and come back and stay up all night with her. I'll just call my wife and tell her that I wont' come home tonight. There is no antidote for the reaction and the only thing I could do is put an IV in her and watch her all night". Then he started rambling on about when he had an allergic reaction to penicilin when he was a kid. I didn't know if it was serious or not. What could he do now? Needless to say I will be finding another VET.

Yes (ugh) not a very nice guy huh!
You did right by calling and he shouldn't have brushed you off like that. How is she doing now?

I found out the names of the medicine injections that he gave her. They were in one shot. Baytril (antibiotic) and Dipyrone (fever). She was better this morning, but she was acting a little weird with water like I said.
