Crack!!! Sploosh!!! HALP!!!

We will start this thread by agreeing I am a Derelict Doggy Dad and just get that topic out of the way right off the hop.

Never let your kids out of your sight for even a second!!!

Yesterday, I was walking Abby and Keeper around the lake in Alix, Alberta. I'd kept them off the lake given the time of year but they had disappeared around a corner before I came across the scene below, Keeper having gone through the ice at the shoreline weakened by the local beavers. I rapidly scrambled through the brambles, shooting these scenes as I did so from the hip with a forgiving 18 mm wide-angle lens (you'd be amazed how little I actually look through the viewfinder when taking pictures).

Seven years ago Keeper went through the ice of a slough near her home but that predicament was far more dire, only her head and paws above the ice as she struggled to find purchase. In this case below, her feet seem to be touching bottom but she's still too far in to get leverage to push herself out.

The rescue below, I grab her by the collar and haul her upwards and out . . . . . soaked for sure. Fortunately, I'd estimate less than a minute had passed from the moment she went in to her rescue.

A few minutes later, a happy-go-lucky Keeper trundles down the path, the scenes above already a fading memory

This is what happens when you let your Golden forage around in a stubble field in the Spring. Unfortunately, we were guests in someone else's home and it took a half an hour, several buckets of water and lots of towels to clean both of them up for presentation in the house.

Good Friday below . . . . . lots of snow around Calgary. Abby on a ridge with low fog.

Our refuge on windy days, the forest . . . .

You can tell which way the wind had been blowing . . .

Its scary how fast it happens isnt it. When Kita was a young pup ( abput 6 months old) she too went in the creek here. We were walking along the bridge and she for some reason jumped off. she couldnt touch, but Guy could, so his beer went flying and he went in after her. It was a quick walk back to the house to warm them both up.
now we dont go out that direction this time of year, it was the scariest moment I have ever had with Kita.

Great pictures, glad Keeper wasnt traumatized by the incident and everyone had a good day regardless!

That's pretty frightening, Rick. Every year I hear stories of people losing dogs under the ice along the river walk this time of years--the current is so fast there and people just don't seem to learn. Breaks my heart every time. I'm glad to finally hear a happy ending to the story!

Beautiful scenery as usual! The vistas are just so huge there! Almost brings on the agoraphobia in us forest-dwelling troglodytes!

Great pics! Very scary though. Boo cracked the ice at a lake when he was younger... He didn't mind the cold though.

I'm glad Keeper's ok.

Wow, glad Keeper was ok. Frozen ice isn't much of an issue around here . Great pics Rick, I really like the one in the forest.

Breathtaking pictures RickC, our winter is much the same as yours and my gang get to enjoy 150 acres of doggie heaven. A river, creek and a smelly duck pond are contiuously being investigated for a water spot right now, they were starting to unfreeze but we got hit with a storm for three days.

I am glad your beautiful Goldens enjoyed themselves, my gang can't wait to go for a Retriever polar dip.

Holy cow! I'd be pooping my pants!!

I'm very relieved that everything turned out okay. And I'm sorry you guys got so much snow down there......we're anticipating some tonight up here .

You know, I think my little Mocha would probably lose his mind if he fell into the water like that. He doesn't take too kindly to being wet....

The time issue kind of got me curious and then it occurred to me the log on the camera would probably have a record . . . .

For amusement, thanks to Nikon technology, I have a picture of Keeper running towards me down a trail at 1:34:44, Abby running down the trail in a different spot, not near the water, at 1:36:51 and then, disaster striking, the first picture presented here of both of them together at the water at 1:37:55, the second picture of Keeper closer up at 1:38:02 and finally with my hand finally pulling Keeper out at 1:38:13 in the last picture.

So . . . . that's 18 seconds between the first disaster picture and the point where my hand is pulling Keeper out . . . . and 1:04 from the previous moment where everything is cool and then everything going to heck!!

Don't take your eyes off your kids for even a minute!! Literally.

Rick, so glad everything turned out okay. Must have been scary for you though, and Keeper. She looks distraught at not being able to get out! Poor girl. As always beautiful pictures.
