Here we go again...again

Ok, I think I have given the raw diet enough chances. Well it is not working, or at least I hope it is the food again.
Starting before OB class last night Harley started wicked diareah.
This morning all white and mucusy. Not a good sign.
Came home at lunch. Same thing.
I am not going to feed him tonight, and hope this is it.
He was doing great with commercial raw, up until the blockage, now Raw does not seem to be digesting at all.
He has been having soft stool for a long time, but this was bad.
SOOOOOOOOOO We are going to be raw drop outs, and hope things go back to normal. back to no cookies, no nothing other than his kibble.
Everytime it seems to be getting worse instead of better.
Any other suggestions ????? I just do not want him to suffer, the last stool he was straining, but came out.

sometimes, no matter what, it just doesn't fit if he can eat the DVP with no problems, and get nice stools from that, then go for it! what matters is that he is digesting his food, period. that it works, nobody likes the hershey poop patrol!

I thought it would help him. obviously not, I hope I did not destroy his stomache. He always had a weak one, but things have been getting worse....This is why I never write about my cat, he does not have issues, lol

Don't feel bad Rottielover... I had to drop out too after about 6 years due to Ceili's ever increasing and changing-by-the-day food intolerances and Declan's butt-bomb reactions to chicken, beef and a few veggies. I'm sure his tummy will settle back into the new regime in no time.

Harley was rushed to the vet yesterday morning. the night before he would not stop vomiting. I found blood in the vomit. Mixed with the diareah, he was dehydrated. He went to the vet and was put on an IV all day. They let him come home, because he did not puke since the morning. He is still all groggy, and upset. Diareah still there, but no vomit.
He has all the signs of ecoli, same as my other dog that almost died.
He was tested yesterday morning, and should have results back by this afternoon.
Please pray for him. I almost lost one to this, I pray it is not.
He is strictly on pedilyte and chicken broth, with 1/4 cup of reg food 8 times a day.
They gave him more metronzidole for the diareah.
He has not had it good. I am worried.....Right now he is sleeping on my bed, closed door, he does not want to be disturbed.
He kept he 1/2 cup I gave him so far. And he has kep all the pedilyte down.
I am watching very closely about hydration......He seems ok this morning..

ok results are in.....Blood panel normal, only alittle sign of ecoli, nothing to be worried about, but his protein in the blood was lower than it should be. We are going in tomorrow, but it does look like we are dealing with IBD.
I am going to do alot of research, I prefer not to have him on their food.
As for the blood in the vomit, she thinks it is because he was straining after the last 2, and he damaged his esphogas.
So..................... Harley is doing alittle better tonight. Resting.

Low protein in blood, and belly swelling is leading them to believe that he does indeed have IBD. he is alittle more energetic. wohoooooo
Now to find something we can both tolerate. Financial, and physical....
No more treats for him. no more cookies. Going to make this little journey difficult.
Have to do alot of research. Oh ya, more meds. Anti inflamitory for 3 weeks, then slowly wean him off, and an antibiotic

raw carrots are too hard to digest, but maybe cooked ones. Training with bananas may be alittle difficult. I could always use the food he is on, unless does not get better, then have to switch

I'm so sorry to hear about all the trouble Harley has been through. I'm glad he's on the road to recovery though!

I've been wanting to ask this question for some time. When you all say you're feeding your dogs "raw", do you mean that you're feeding "people" food that is cooked like you and I would eat, or is it literally raw people food? Like raw chicken, raw hamburger, etc.? And can't dogs get sick from eating raw, uncooked food just like we can get sick from it?
Thanks,
M

if the meat is human-grade and fresh (even a bit stinky is ok!) and your dog's health is normal (ie: immune system not compromised by extreme illness) then the answer is yes, raw meat is perfectly safe for them. in fact most dogs *thrive* on a proper raw diet

For the newbies to raw though (sorry Techno ) do NOT feed anything that is less than absolutely than fresh for awhile. If you wouldn't eat it cooked, don't feed it raw. It challenges their digestive and immune systems too much until they purge and acclimatize to raw.

Rottielover we may have 'jacked your thread. I'm interested in comparing experiences with you though ~ did you stick to beef and chicken ? Or did you find the same thing with game meats, duck, lamb and fish ?
