Hello from a new guy

I will be retiring on June 1, and I would like to get a dog. I have not owned one since 1984. I live alone in Winnipeg in a small apartment with a fenced yard and I am somewhat restricted in activity during extremely cold weather because of arthritis. I know I need a small dog and I like alertness & intelligence without a high energy level.
The last dog I owned was an alpha male toy poodle and I had no problem training him after my ex gave up trying.
I prefer a mixed breed because I won't spend an arm & a leg for a dog.
Any suggestions?

HI and welcome!
I admire your willingness to ask opinion on your future dog. Have you checked your local shelter??? A rescue would be a wonderful idea, the puppy stage already over with but still perhaps training to be done.
Or you can check Petfinder too.
Smaller dogs could be harder to find in rescue ( as it is here)
Good luck

Hi and WELCOME!!

Here's a good place to start when you're thinking about adopting :

http://www.petfinder.com/

Alot of good rescues and shelters post their available dogs on there, it's a good way of finding a rescue in your area. Good luck, and keep us posted!

Welcome to the forum. I agree with the others about getting an older dog, or perhaps, even fostering.
