Digital pics
Don't ask me how, but somehow I have accumulated over 9000 digital pictures since getting a digital camera 3 years ago.... I am going to be formating my drive today, so I am backing up the pics...I'm going on 45 minutes so far!!

I really have to empty my computer out soon.

I've had my digital camera less than two years and have probably taken about 40,000 frames, with 7,000 remaining on my computer.
Bought a new digital on the weekend, a new Nikon D80 with 10.2 megapixels, rewarding myself for hitting a lofty business target in July. Rick C www.goldentales.ca |

I'm thinking of getting one of those external storage devices . . . . cost about $600 I think . . . . but I could jam a lot of pictures on there. Rick C www.goldentales.ca |

external drives are so cheap now. You can get a 260GB drive for under $200. It's less than a dollar a GB with the larger drives now.

I saw this in the future shop ad last week. it was on sale for $129.00 but is now $169.99 but still not bad, it's 40 gig so it can hold a few pics. I like this idea because it's like a portable photo album that holds lots of pics, even if the screen is only 2 inches. I was going to get this for my parents for x-mas (to empty their camera) when they go across canada. http://www.futureshop.ca/catalog/pro...54&catid=23795

cheaper yes, but it has no screen to see the pics. I like the more expensive one because you can see the pics right away. it has an all in one card reader so no computer needed. if you are not near a puter ( like if my parents are on the road for their trip across canada) 40 gig holds a lot of pics.
If you use your puter for pics a 160 gig hard drive is better for sure. ![]() DQ |

For someone like me,not very computer-savvy,but really worried about losing all my pics one day, would loading the pics to back-up discs be the easiest way??Or buying an eternal drive??
Mind you I don't even know how to do that have to get my son to help

Just go to your local computer store (I'm not talking about FutureShop or BestBuy) and buy yourself a harddrive (right now 300GB = $110 where I am) and a 3.25" drive enclosure which comes with power supply and cables for about...$25-$40 (they all work the same but the more expensive enclosures look nicer cosmetically) and put it together yourself (takes 5 min.). You can put dvd burner drives etc. in those too (the 5.25" drive enclosures). That's how I have it setup at home. I have like one that I use for back up, another for downloaded movies that I don't have time to watch yet, and a portable dvd burner for my uber-small laptop with no internal floppy/cd/dvd drives!
Oh, and if anyone is in the GTA and requires assitance putting one together, let me know, I'd be glad to show you how.

1) it requires a software cd!?!? wth? it's just a USB HDD (harddisk drive), it shouldn't require any 2) data buffer = 2MB, they're using *old* HDDs for this, almost all HDDs have at least 8M buffers now 3) warranty is only 1-year, but if you bought an HDD + enclosure and put it together yourself, the warranty is 3-5 years depending on the manufacturer of the HDD 4) relating to #3, you don't which what brand of HDD they put in there, where as you could buy a reliable brand like Quantum or Western Digital if you built your own
