Question Dog's nose swollen, has sores.

I don't think this problem is serious enough to bring my dog to the emergency vet clinic, but don't really know what's going on. I have a 10 month old corgi.

Two days ago I noticed slight swelling on the bridge of my dog's nose, and the skin was bright pink. This didn't seem to cause her any pain when I touched it, and her behavior remained mormal. Things remained unchanged until this morning when oozing sores appeared on the swelling. The afflicted area is not large, maybe the size of a silver dollar, and the sores are fairly small. Still, her behavior is very normal, she seems alert, playful, and all body functions are normal. She has no known allergies.

Does anyone have any idea what may be going on? If this persists into next week or dramatically changes, I will of course take her to the vet. Your thoughts are much appreciated!

If her breathing is not obstructed by this, then I don't think a trip to the emergency vet is needed at this time. HOWEVER, this is not something you want to wait very long to get to a vet, I would schedule an appointment first thing Monday morning with your regular vet (provided they don't have hours today) to have that checked immediately. It could be anything from a bite/sting that's getting infected to allergies to any number of hideous things. You wouldn't wait if it were your face and it's progressing in severity, don't make your pup Good luck, please let us know how she fares at the vet.

Just a thought: are you feeding her in plastic bowls? Some dogs are allergic to plastic.

It sounds like it warrants a visit to emergency to be safe. Even if it doesn't get worse or gets a little better, I would get it checked out first thing Monday for sure. I've known people to take their dog to the emergency simply for not greeting a visitor, so I don't think it would be over reacting. Good luck

Possibly an auto immune disease, though not a need to see an emergency vet, but it should be checked out to either confirm or rule out, if it is then life long management is needed as there in no cure

Hello...

This could be a number of things, but I would get it checked out.

My dog had similar symptoms on his nose this spring....we went to the vet and it turned out to be a virilant staph infection from a problem like impetigo, I'm sorry i can't remember the exact name exact that the human form was impetigo...Niko was on antibiotics, for 3 weeks and it got worse before it got better including some hair fallout on his nose.

It started as a pinky mark with what almost looked like pimples...
it can be quite a deep infection quickly.

Please let us know how your dog is doing, kimmee

Hi guys,
Thank you for the insights. Here is an update:

During the course of the day yesterday, the swelling seemed to go down and the sores dried up a bit. Today the trouble spot has gotten smaller, and the sores are still dry...they have developed scabs. I will continue to keep an eye on her, and have it looked at if progess does not continue (quickly!). Unfortunately I'm a poor grad student that will readily take the dog in if needed, but I'm willing to give this time to heal on its own unless it takes a nasty turn. I'm still not sure what might have caused this, but she spends a good amount of time outdoors and may simply have gotten into something.

Again, thanks, and I will keep you posted on her progress!

Gosh, if I were smart I would have taken pics. But this is a school computer, so I will have to bring pics in tomorrow.
